How to make hot chocolate with chocolate syrup and milk

I don't know about you, but I definitely remember the days of squeezing way too much Hershey's Chocolate Syrup into my milk to make chocolate milk growing up. Even as an adult, I still love chocolatey drinks. I often have a batch of homemade chocolate oat milk in my fridge or am making dairy-free ice mochas for a little afternoon pick me up. Since I love chocolate milk so much I've started to make my own homemade chocolate syrup and it makes the most delicious, refreshing dairy-free chocolate milk in just minutes!

Expert Tips

  1. Be sure to whisk your cocoa powder, sugar and hot water together really well so that you don't have any clumps in your homemade chocolate syrup.
  2. I love to use an immersion blender to blend my chocolate syrup into my non-dairy milk before adding ice. This makes the chocolate milk super smooth and well combined. If you're making a large batch of chocolate milk, you can always use a blender as well!

Recipe FAQs

Is Hershey's syrup real chocolate?

There are a few versions of Hershey's Chocolate Syrup, one of which (so I hear) only contains 5 simple ingredients and doesn't contain high fructose corn syrup. However, the more common Hershey's syrup that you'll find contains high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, water, cocoa, and sugar.
I wouldn't consider it real chocolate, but instead would call it a chocolate-flavored syrup. That doesn't mean it's delicious!

Are chocolate sauce and chocolate syrup the same thing?

Chocolate syrup is usually a runnier consistency and often doesn't contain milk or dairy products. Store-bought chocolate sauces and hot fudge sauces are often thicker in consistency and are made that way by the addition of cream or other dairy products.

What can be made from chocolate syrup?

Other than using this homemade chocolate syrup to make chocolate milk, I also love to drizzle it on desserts (especially ice cream), add it to my smoothies, drizzle it on on peanut butter toast, dip fruit like strawberries and bananas into it, or blend it into my iced coffee to make a delicious iced mocha.

How do you store chocolate syrup?

I store this homemade chocolate syrup in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 weeks.

Can you just heat chocolate milk to make hot chocolate?

Heat fat free chocolate milk on low heat on stove top or in oven (be careful because it will burn). Serve in a styrofoam cup with a 'coffee sip lid'. Tip!

How do you make a simple hot chocolate?

Whisk together the cocoa, sugar, salt, and about 2 tablespoons milk in a small saucepan over medium-low heat until cocoa and sugar are dissolved. Whisk in the rest of the milk and heat it over medium heat, whisking occasionally, until it is hot. Stir in the vanilla and serve.

How do you heat chocolate syrup?

Microwave on High (100%) 35-40 seconds. * Stir until smooth; pour into serving dish. If refrigerated, increase heating time about 15 seconds.

Do you make hot chocolate with milk or water?

Which to Use—Milk, Soy, or Water? Whole milk lends to the creaminess and sweetness of hot chocolate, but feel free to use low-fat or nonfat milk if you prefer. For a thicker, richer hot chocolate, switch out 1/4 cup of milk for cream. Soy milk or another non-dairy milk is an alternative if you are lactose intolerant.
