Hello!
I just purchased a used civic, and the speedometer isn’t working in it.
My mechanic actually gave up on it after not being able to find the part. He was unable to retrofit the part he got from Honda.
I don’t give up that easy, I’m just going to patiently wait for a civic to pop up at pullapart and get my part there.
I don’t think it’s the speed sensor causing my issue, as the sensor isn’t jumping around (like in one of eric’s videos). The speedometer needle actually sticks around 20mph, once you get on the highway it will break free and move freely, then repeat when it gets lower. It jiggles in low speeds.
My question is: which part to I replace? Do I take apart the cluster and remove the actual speedometer from it – or does something else need done?
Also, do I need an official sticker for my doorframe to report the mileage – where would I get that sticker?
Thanks!
It's either a faulty VSS (vehicle speed sensor) or the speedometer section of your cluster has failed.

The same things was going on with my civic. Try replacing the speed sensor but I am more than sure its your speed o gauge.

I experienced erratic speedo with misfire codes and o2 sensor codes. Number 15 fuse -- speed sensor blown. If it continues there is a common problem with this model year. Wiring harness located below air intake mainifold chafed. A bracket below the manifold is rubbing on the harness. If it is not too late, you can electrical tape, liquid electrical tape, re splice or cover with wire loom.

On my old 98, the speedometer/odometer got intermittent...It seemed to not work for the first few minutes of driving, then start working...very annoying...
I took it out, messed with the connection, but didn't get it back to normal...
(I researched and it seemed that people said the speedo would have to be rebuilt)
end result: I bought the whole cluster off of ebay with the same mileage... around $100 bucks

If there's no signal from the sensor, the CEL should come on with the VSS code. If the CEL stays off it is likely the sensor is OK but the speedometer head is not working. Also note if the odometer turns properly or not.
If it does seem to be no signal from the sensor, make sure to inspect / repair the wires on the back of the engine (so called "Fuse 15 problem"). Also check the sensor plug for corrosion or damage.

The code is P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor A
