There are only four episodes left of The Rings of Power, Amazon Studios’ highly anticipated (and highly expensive) Lord of the Rings sequel series that earned early accolades from critics. Adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien’s book series, The Rings of Power is set in the Second Age — thousands of years before the events in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings — and brings new and familiar characters to the small screen. Created by Patrick McKay and John Payne, the Amazon Studios original series’ first season will span eight episodes and stars Benjamin Walker as the Elven High King Gil-Galad, Morfydd Clark as young Galadriel (played by Cate Blanchett in Peter Jackson’s movies), Robert Aramayo as young Elrond (portrayed by Hugo Weaving in the films), Charles Edwards as the Elven prince Celebrimbor, Owain Arthur as the Dwarven prince Durin IV and Maxim Baldry as Isildur. As Amazon only bought the screen rights to The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and novels’ appendices, The Rings of Power explores the events of the Second and Third Ages, including the forging of the Rings of Power and the Last Alliances of Elves and Men. (Jackson’s trilogy took place in the Third Age.) In a recent chat on The Business podcast with The Hollywood Reporter‘s Kim Masters, Jackson explained, “About four, five years ago, they asked if I would be interested in it…. So I said, ‘Have you got the scripts yet?’ Because I know how hard the scripts were to write for the films, and I didn’t know the people writing their scripts. They said, ‘Oh no, we haven’t got the scripts yet, but as soon as we do, we’ll send you the scripts.’ So I was waiting for the scripts to arrive, and they never did.” The award-winning filmmaker added that he will still watch the Amazon prequel series. “I’m not the sort of guy who wishes ill will. Filmmaking is hard enough. If somebody makes a good film or TV show, it’s something to celebrate. The one thing I am looking forward to is actually seeing it as a perfectly neutral viewer,” he says. In a statement, Amazon Studios responded: “In pursuing the rights for our show, we were obligated to keep the series distinct and separate from the films. We have the utmost respect for Peter Jackson and The Lord of The Rings films and are thrilled that he is looking forward to watching The Rings of Power.” Per the show’s logline, the series “will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.” Amazon spent $465 million on the first season of the series, which was shot in New Zealand. The e-commerce giant-turned-movie studio also plans to film five potential seasons and possible spinoff series in the country. The first Rings of Power teaser dropped during the Super Bowl in February and the main trailer was released July 14 following an exclusive preview period for Amazon Prime members.
