2010 chevy impala 3.5 camshaft position sensor location

I was wondering if anybody knew where I could find the CKP. I have a 2008 Impala with the 3.5L engine. I have tried searching all over and could not figure out where it could be.

Just some background as to why I am searching for it...
If my car is not to full operating temperature, and I accelarate to over 3.5k rpm in first gear, it will hesitate switching into second, and then usually do a rough shift into second. When this happens, my rpm gauge drops to 0 and stays there until I turn the car off for a few minutes or disconnect the battery. No codes showed up, but I did not usually drive the car far because it would drive like crap. I decided I would take my code reader with me, and checked it when this happened and the car was still on. I had a pending code p0366. I am not sure why it only does it when cold, but I figured replacing the CKP would be the first thing to try. If anybody has different advice, let me know.

Note: P0366 is a camshaft position sensor error code. Try disconnecting/cleaning sensor connector assuring it makes a good connection. The engine movement during the hard shift could be causing intermittent sensor readings.

If engine not up to full temp then transmission temp is probably low and fast take offs may cause ECM to limit normal gear changes until transmission temp is up.

I may not remember the code correctly. I do recall it being crankshaft though as I thought it made sense seeing as the crankshaft position sensor is where computer gets the rpm from. Unless I am mistaken on that...

I am still not sure where I can locate that sensor though. The diagram on the website that was linked above isnt very clear. Is that on the firewall side of the engine?

Yes firewall, if change sensor there is a relearn procedure. Don't have the specifics.

A tech 2 scanner is needed if the sensor is replaced.. a CASE relearn must be performed.

Just an FYI - you can also do a relearn with an HPTuner device.

I was aware of the relearn. I'll have the dealer do it when they are fixing my ignition switch recall I still have to get done. Thanks guys.

Lol at the ignition switch recall.. You're going to take your car to the dealer so they can add a tab to your key?

I never really looked into what they actually fix. Is that all they do? I wasn't very concerned with it...just figured I'd bring it in so I stop getting the letters. Now I have a different reason to bring it in...although I might be able to find a shop that will do the relearn for cheaper. We'll see I guess.

Yes, the keylock recall is bring all your keys in to the dealer and then they basically glue a modification to each fob head to support the key better. Really only helps if you are the type with a big keychain full of keys and extra stuff, it transfers some of the weight.

Agree ridiculous "fix"..... but I guess it works. The new keys you with an 8th gen Impala don't have the little inserts in them, they're actually molded that way. Just a very small hole for the key ring to fit through. At sweet that's the way the keys are in our late build 2014 limited.

im new to this and still have trouble finding my way, but do u still have the password for the echo ghost site ? i cant seem to be able to find my CKP on my 08 Impala

Crankshaft is underneath the black cover near the drive pulleys.

Cam shaft is under the power steering pump.

I finally got the CKP sensor changed today. It was not a pleasant experience...but seemed to fix my original problem. I spent countless hours trying to figure out how to get to that stupid sensor...it is in the worst location ever. The sensor is located on the firewall side of the engine. You can see it from underneath the car if you look straight up in between the oil and transmission pan. Virtually cant be seen any other way. This is by far the best way to get access to it:

Remove top engine mounts. Pull motor as far forward as possible. Remove the coolant reservoir. Remove alternator. After that is out of the way, you can get your hand in from the passenger side and around to the back of the engine. It is still not easy, and you will need long arms. I was able to get a small ratchet (1/4" drive) with a small extension on the bolt to remove it. Should be able to pull it off, with the connector still attached. Once bolt is removed and it is free'd, you can move it out to by the pulleys and easily disconnect the connector.

I got everything working again. I also did the spark plugs while I the motor mounts off and everything. So far no check engine light or anything like that. Seems to run good. Any need to do the relearn if everything is working?

Anybody know if I need/should do the relearn still if no CEL?
