There seems to be a lot of confusion about camshaft vs crankshaft position sensor locations on the internet. Let me clear it up for you, replace them BOTH! Just buy both from the start. Just like head or tail lights, one doesn't last long once the other's been replaced. The CAMSHAFT sensor is usually found on the LEFT side of the engine. The CRANKSHAFT sensor is the one behind the RIGHT side of the engine. The cam sensor is the one with the U-shaped bolt hole, while the crank sensor has a closed circular bolt hole. The cam sensor has wire attached to it, where the crank sensor does not. The bolt hole on the cam sensor is parallel to the sensor, the bolt hole for the crank sensor is at an angle from the sensor and the connector housing makes the part L-shaped. Most of the vids I've seen on YouTube that refer to the cam sensor are, in fact, the crank sensor, which is another reason I stress replacing BOTH AT THE SAME TIME. If you think you're pulling the cam, only to find out it was the crank, you'll have the part on hand. Work smarter, not harder! I'm posting this because I wish this info had been available to me before I pulled the crank instead of the cam and subsequently had to go buy the crank sensor too. The cam is by far the more expensive part, so just grab the crank the first time you go to the parts store and you'll save yourself a lot of trouble. After-market or not, in this case, the part you pull should look exactly like the new part. Cam - felt tip, U-shaped bolt hole, wires attached to it. Crank - metal tip, circular bolt hole, L-shaped, no wires attached. I hope this was helpful to someone else.

2005 Chrysler Town & Country

Asked by   in Denham Springs, LA on  January 18, 2009

where is the crankshaft sensor on a 2005 town and country van located and how do i change it

4 replies Report

The 3.3/3.8L crankshaft sensor is located on the rear of the transmission housing, above the differential housing The bottom of the sensor is positioned next to the drive plate. Remove the 10mm bolt holding the sensor in place and remove the sensor. Install the new crankshaft sensor.
Install crankshaft sensor bolt and tighten. Connect wiring.

If you face the front of the engine(the pulley side) the crank sensor is directly under the exhaust manifold. It has a small square electrical plug that goes into it. A small 10mm bolt holds it in place, spray some lube around it before you try to remove it, and work it out slowly as they sometimes get stuck.

I have a 2007 Chrysler town and country I'm having the crankshaft position sensor replaced but the mechanics at Fletcher's can't find where the part is!! They say it's supposed to be in the back but it's not some forms say it's up from does anyone have any idea. They tried to send my wife home without fixing it cause they couldn't find it!!

Searched for 2 hours on my 2006 Town and Country ... could not find the CKP. Was looking on the port side of the engine - where the tranny and engine meet, under the exhaust ... wires pass in that region, but no sensor connects to the engine or tranny anywhere nearby. Still mystified.

Hello,

My wife's 2010 3.8L 140,000 mile Town & Country threw a strange P0340 code today and I'm destined to replace the sensor to show her I tried. I've purchased the new one already but just can't find it under the hood or in the search feature here or on google. Where is that darned thing? Under the alternator someplace?

Not sure it matters much but the specifics were she was driving about 30mph on a rainy day, reported hearing a clunk and then all sorts of lights came on including traction control and vehicle stability. She drove for a few at the 25mph the van would drive. Turned it off. Turned it on and it has been working fine since. The autoparts store pulled the code for me.

The van has been really good to us. Last few years its developed a hatred of its EGR valve, the CEL is on about 1/2 the time with an EGR code. Thanks for any insights or tips to the best way to access that Cam Position Sensor.

The camshaft position sensor in located just behind and below the left end of the throttle body.

The sensor is shown in the following video at around 2:30 minutes.

Note: The sensor in your 3.8L is the same as the one in the 3.3L in the video.

Thank you very much. It was a little bit of feeling around but that video sure showed me where to feel.

FWIW, I had the van idling for about 30 minutes after I changed it and drove a few miles, it behaved properly.

A couple random thoughts:

Before I went for the drive I discovered our van apparently has a 3,000 rpm rev limiter when in park. I revved fine past that driving.

If it saves anyone else trouble feeling around in the future I think it was a 10mm bolt holding the sensor in.

You CAN access that bolt with a socket through a gap or hole or under that motor mount.

What are the symptoms of a faulty camshaft sensor?

A glowing check engine light, stalling, poor acceleration and bad fuel mileage are all possible signs your camshaft position sensor may be failing. Gone are the days of carburetors and distributors, replaced by a variety of sensors that help a car's computer get the maximum performance out of the engine.

Where is the crankshaft position sensor located on a 2005 Dodge Caravan?

2 Answers. Chrysler 2.4 crankshaft position sensor is bolted in lower engine block, behind the engine (engine side facing the vehicle's firewall) look above the oil filter adapter from under car. Crank sensor held/secured by a bolt, remove bolt and sensor will come out with a little pull/twist force.

Where is my camshaft position sensor located?

The Camshaft Position sensor is typically located in the cylinder head of the engine and has a cylindrical portion that inserts into the head. The Crankshaft Position sensor is normally located in the timing cover or on the side of the block with a cylindrical portion that inserts into the block.
