One of the new features that Apple added to the iPhone 12 series this year is the MagSafe wireless charging system. With the use of powerful magnets, accessories with a MagSafe magnet on the back, such as cases and wallets, can be attached to a compatible iPhone 12 model.

Using MagSafe could result in a circular imprint on a leather iPhone case

Apple posted a new support page on its website that not only explains how to use the MagSafe system to charge your iPhone but also lists some of the downsides to using it. For example, security badges, credit cards, passports, and even key fobs placed between an iPhone and a MagSafe charger can damage the magnetic strips used on those items. This could wipe all of the data stored on your cards. If you do own a MagSafe Wallet, a metal case, or a case that is too thick, make sure those aforementioned cards are removed before charging. That is not necessary if you have one of the MagSafe cases (as opposed to the wallets).

Another issue that has been reported by users is one where "circular imprints" are left on leather cases from the accessory. This warning can be found at the very bottom of the support page in tiny letters and it says, "If you keep your iPhone in a leather case while charging with your MagSafe Charger, the case might show circular imprints from the contact."

When using the MagSafe charger, the phone could get a wee bit warmer. To extend the life of the phone's battery, when the iPhone is too hot, software will limit the battery from charging above 80%. After heavy use, the MagSafe Charger could take longer to charge. If the heat is preventing your handset from charging, move your phone and charger to a cooler location. And here's something to file away in your brain for another day. If you're employing the MagSafe Charger and accidentally are employing the Lightning connector at the same time, the iPhone will charge using the Lightning port and disable MagSafe.

If you've ever used a wireless charging pad before, you'll have no problem getting MagSafe to work. The feature is compatible with the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, Apple MagSafe accessories, and Qi-certified devices and accessories. To use the MagSafe Charger, the USB-C connector must be connected to a USB-C power adapter rated at 20W or higher. If you use an adapter that is lower than 12W, the device won't charge. If it is running at 12W to 19W, the device will charge less quickly.

What is Wireless Charging and MagSafe?

Wireless charging describes it in the name! It's when you can charge your phone...wirelessly using a MagSafe charger or any mat you can find online. MagSafe is the name of Apple's wireless charging accessory and device and supports iPhone 8 Plus and onwards.

There are industry standards with wireless charging, the most common is Qi. It is supported by all major companies, including Apple.

However, only iPhone 12s have an added magnetic connection for better charging and attachment.

Before purchasing a MagSafe or another brand of wireless charger, make sure your phone has wireless charging in the first place. Your Samsung phone may work with an Apple MagSafe but double-check before making a purchase!

Do I need a MagSafe Apple Case to use their MagSafe charger?

No, you don't. Their iPhone 12 cases have an added magnet that helps align the phone to the MagSafe charging pad. You can use whatever phone case you like to charge your phone wirelessly. However, depending on the phone case brand, their case may not work with wireless charging to check so you don't have to take it off to charge.

Can you use a MagSafe case on a wireless charger?

If you're just looking for a way to charge your phone wirelessly from time to time, you don't need to buy a MagSafe case. Any Qi-compatible wireless charging case will do the trick. And if you have an iPhone 12 or above, you can also use Apple's MagSafe charger to wirelessly charge your phone without a case.

What's the difference between a MagSafe and wireless charging case?

While your new iPhone will still work with other Qi-enabled wireless chargers, chargers with MagSafe can deliver faster wireless charging up to 15W when locked in with an iPhone 12, where other wireless chargers deliver up to 7.5W.
