Step 4: Remove Plug

Snap the plug free by inserting a flat head screwdriver or a small chisel in the cut and push it against the plug along the grain. Snapping against the grain results in the plug breaking uneven and too short to use.

It is always difficult to fit plugs perfectly; any slight runout in your drill-press quill can make the holes oversize. Unfortunately, this runout will also make plugs undersize. The combination leads to ill-fitting plugs that are very noticeable in your finished work.

Snug-Plug cutters are designed to cut slightly tapered plugs; the first 3 mm of the plug is the stated size (6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm) and then flares out at a 3° included angle.

Unlike regular plug cutters, they also shave the plug sides as they cut, producing very smooth plugs. Put a bit of glue in the hole, just tap a plug into it until you meet resistance, then cut off the excess. You will then have a plug that fits perfectly, with a nearly invisible line between the plug and the workpiece.

These plug cutters are carefully reamed after hardening to ensure perfect concentricity. It is difficult to believe how nice a plugging job you can do until you actually use one. 9.5 mm shanks.

Veritas Snug-Plug Cutters

are the only ones that have a cylindrical portion for good penetration, then taper for a tight fit. If you cut plugs from scrap that matches your work, line up the grain, and trim carefully, the result will be nearly invisible.

Sharpening

Snug-Plug Cutters come ready for use but should be honed occasionally for optimum cutting. Using a thin flat file, a sharpening stone or 320x sandpaper glued to hardboard, hone the face of each tooth, maintaining the factory rake angle.

After prolonged use, if the tips dull, file the top bevel at the original angle. Keep the tooth height even.

Advantages over cylindrical plugs.

They always fit snugly. Even if a hole is 0.4 mm oversize, a tapered plug will fit snugly. This ensures that you have no unsightly gaps in your finished work.

The first portion of the plug is cylindrical and has a rounded tip, ensuring easy entry and adequate penetration before the taper comes into play.

Tapered plugs have smooth, shaved sides, eliminating the torn fibers that usually result from using one, two or four-flute cylindrical cutters.

What are plug cutter bits used for?

A plug cutter is a wood working or joinery tool used to cut wooden plugs for use as filler pieces to repair imperfections or damage in wooden items where the use of wood putty is undesirable. Such tools are manufactured for use in a hand drill or drill press and have cutting edges designed for hard or soft wood.

Can you use a plug cutter with a hand drill?

(Caution: Plug cutters have no pilot to guide the cut, so they're not safe to use in a handheld drill.)
