What does spun bearing sound like

When my EJ25 lost a rod bearing it was friggin' loud like a diesel.

I know this is elementary but it fits....
"SOURCE: Subaru Tech Tips
TITLE: Engine Noise When Cold
APPLIES TO: 96-00 Impreza/Legacy/Forester 2.2/2.5

SERVICE TIP:
Subaru has received several reports from the field of an engine noise that could be mistaken for an internal engine noise.

This noise is heard after a cold start and will gradually go away as the engine warms up. It may therefore be difficult to reproduce unless the vehicle is left overnight. The noise sounds like it comes from the front of the engine and could be mistaken for failed bearings.

It has been found that the timing belt tensioner on these vehicles may be weak allowing the timing belt to move and hit the inside of the timing belt cover. The bearing itself could also be at fault.

Please make sure you listen to the actual noise before reaching a diagnosis.

If you suspect the belt tensioner, remove the front cover and look for evidence of rubbing or chafing.

Note that once removed, the timing belt tensioner feels fine."

Damn dude, before I even opened the thread I thought of a jackhammer. Good lord, the memories I have of that sound. If you are just now getting the opportunity to experience it, I feel for you. :icon_frow

Well....I dont feel bad about it really. It nothing I could have caused or avoided. The engone has 143K with 1/2 of those miles getting abused.

For the longest time I thought I messed the MP112 up so this was a relief believe it or not. I'm still gonna drive it but man, 2,500 RPMs sounds like a construction site!

if you keep driving on it, you might end up having to replace the crank.

Doesn't matter. I have a shortblock from Morad on my list of winter projects.

She was a good engine, took a lot of abuse.

Isn't that how it always goes, a day late and a buck short!

Thanks Ed. I'll be driving up to get it when the time comes.

I just blew up my stock fiero v6 a week ago. It truely sounds like a jackhammer when a rod bearing is spun. It progressively sounds worse until eventually the rod snaps and the engine blows its guts all over your driveway. Believe me, I know. The sound gets louder and faster with increasing engine speed. You will probably also note a loss of oil pressure once it gets really bad. It's a lot of fun to keep driving the car until it explodes. Towards the end you will get drivers pulling up next to you warning you that your engine is about to explode, as if you were completely oblivious to the jackhammer behind your seat. Good times.

Do you have the "GOLD RUSH" ion the oil dip stick? The metal flakes from the bearings in the oil.

I have heard that infamous sound more than a few times over the years....no fun

That is too bad but as you said you got your $ worth. BUT, if you dirve it till it breaks BIG time, you may not be able to crank over the engine to unbolt the convertor/flywheel fasteners. Now you gonna have even more fun doing an R&R!

Best of luck, Jake

Does a spun bearing ruin engine?

A spun rod bearing will tear up the big end bore in the rod, ruin the rod journal on the crankshaft, and sometimes break the connecting rod. That's really bad news because a broken rod flailing around inside an engine can obviously do a lot of damage!

What does main bearing knock sound like?

Main or Thrust Bearing Noise: A loose crankshaft main bearing produces a dull, steady knock, while a loose crankshaft thrust bearing produces a heavy thump at irregular intervals. The thrust bearing noise might only be audible on very hard acceleration.

Can a spun bearing Be Fixed?

The best case scenario for fixing a spun bearing is you'll replace the crank, rods and pistons, but the block is often also toast so you need a complete new bottom-end on your motor.
