De één-speler Mode in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is 'A Link to the Past' - letterlijk, omdat het de complete Super Nintendo klassieker is, die in een kaart, niet groter dan een reep kauwgum, is geperst. In dit spetterende avontuur ontvangt Link een telepathisch bericht van Zelda, die hem smeekt hem te helpen. Beide spellen bevatten ladingen van die speciale Zelda monstervechtende, raadseloplossende, voorwerpgebruikende actie. Praat met allerlei soorten mensen en wezens om informatie in te winnen over hoe voorwaarts te gaan op de zoektocht. Vecht tegen vijanden en strijd door gevaarlijke en ingewikkelde kerkers om de sleutelobjecten te heroveren, die nieuwe gebieden openen. Voer het zwaard, gooi bommen, voer stormaanvallen uit, manipuleer objecten; en, natuurlijk, pak de voorwerpen die je toegevoegde bekwaamheden geven.
Op de E3-show van 2002 in Los Angeles, kwam Mr Shigeru Miyamoto - de schepper van de Zelda serie - op het podium met vertegenwoordigers bol.com van Namco, Sega en Capcom, om het multiplayer plezier van Four Swords te demonstreren. De vier hoge heren te zien lachen, grappen maken en duwen en sturen, terwijl de veelvoudige Links werden gegooid en zelfs in gaten werden gepropt, was voor vele genoeg bewijs dat deze eerste multiplayer Zelda al gauw na zijn lancering stevig in je Game Boy Advance gelijmd zal zitten.
