Movie InfoHaunted by memories of her late mother and abused by her father (Paul Bettany), 14-year-old Lily Owens (Dakota Fanning) runs away with her friend and caregiver Rosaleen (Jennifer Hudson) to the South Carolina town that holds the key to her mother's past. There, Lily meets the Boatwright sisters (Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, Sophie Okonedo), who take her in and teach her about beekeeping, honey, and the Black Madonna. Lily also discovers that the truth about her mother is closer than she thinks.

Is T Ray abusive to Lily?Ray just rules Lily with a brutal dominance. “You look like her,” he said, and him saying that, I knew he'd said everything. At the end of the novel, T. Ray and Lily have a final confrontation during which he tells Lily she looks like her mother.
What does Ray tell Lily about her mother?She tells him that her mother will not let him harm her, but he laughs at the idea that her dead mother functions as her guardian angel. He tells Lily that Deborah had already abandoned Lily when she returned home and was killed. This comment hurts Lily deeply, but she does not believe T. Ray.
