The Rolex Day-Date launched in 1956 and became the first-ever waterproof & self-winding chronometer watch to offer a modern calendar with an instantaneous day display. It was the first-ever wristwatch to indicate the day of the week spelt out in full.

When the Datejust was released back in 1945, it was positioned as Rolex’s flagship watch, and it set the standard for how a date complication on a wristwatch should function. But by 1956, Rolex was ready to take the next step in calendar wristwatches, and it came up with the Rolex Day-Date as a new flagship line of timepieces.

The popular 18k yellow gold variation of this iconic model eventually came to be known as ‘the President’s watch after being sported by some of the most famous and accomplished leaders, including many US presidents.

The Day-Date has been worn by more presidents, leaders, and celebrities than any other watch.

Exclusively offered in precious metals (except for a small handful of vintage & prototype models in stainless steel), the Rolex Day-Date became a popular choice for many of the world’s most prominent and influential people. The watch was notably worn by the 34the President of the United States, and World War II General Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Since then, the ultimate luxury – The Rolex Day-Date was nicknamed ‘El Presidente,’ which is a watch that features the exclusive President bracelet. Over the years, it has been found on the wrists of many dignitaries worldwide, including Eisenhower’s successors, JFK, and Lyndon B. Johnson.

The Rolex Day-Date Personifies a Luxury Watch

Throughout history, Rolex has only produced the luxurious Day-Date in precious metals, thereby establishing it as the status watch to own. And for this very reason, it has been the favorite luxury watch of the world’s most accomplished people, including heads-of-state, celebrities, professional athletes, and captains of industry (like Warren Buffet). Thanks to its President’s bracelet and the watch being worn by several US Presidents, it has come to be known as more commonly known as the President or Presidential.

The ‘President Watch’ embodies pure luxury, prestige & power. Whoever wears a Day-Date emphasizes their prominent position in politics, economics, or society in general. Every Rolex watch is a solid investment, thanks to the company’s stature in the watch world and other marketing policies. Timepieces from Rolex are therefore classically timeless, coveted collector’s items which enthrall everyone, not just CEOs and heads of state but Rolex fans like you and me.

Pure Luxury: Diamonds, Gold, and Platinum

The Swiss Luxury Watchmaker Rolex exclusively uses yellow, rose (Everose), and white gold or platinum for the cases and President Bracelet. Even the index markers are made of 18k gold and won’t tarnish over the years. Rolex didn’t just create the different colored dials in-house, but interestingly they also produced them almost entirely by hand.

Dials in the Day-date line of watches come in black, blue, green, silver, ice blue, orange, and brown. Bezels are of two types of bezels: fluted or, since 2000, a glossy, domed bezel that sometimes matches the sapphire glass on the platinum watches.

The fluted bezel has been in production since the Day-Date’s inception. Plus, the case comes in two diameters: 36 mm and 40 mm. The Day-Date II is perhaps available with a 41-mm case. Variants with mother-of-pearl dials are stunning too, and many models even feature “diamond index markers.”

The Day-Date ref. 18038 is a highly sought-after watch, and the pre-owned model goes for as little as $ 12,500. These Day-Dates from the 1970s and ’80s have the “Stella” dial. Stella dials are made from solid enamel and come in a variety of colors, including yellow, blue, black, orange, pink, white, mother of pearl, salmon, and more. Enamel dials are usually fired in a furnace, but in this case, it was created using a special kind of enamel varnish.
