Longtime Rick and Morty fans will surely recall that the show’s release schedule hasn’t always been consistent.

The successful Adult Swim animated series underwent a lengthy hiatus between seasons 3 and 4 as the show’s producers negotiated a new contract with the network. When season 4 arrived, it was split up into two five-episode halves with a big break in-between then. Rick and Morty season 5, however, has been the model of consistency. Arriving a little over a year after season 4, this season has run through eight uninterrupted episodes since it first premiered on June 20.

Unfortunately, the show’s streak of uninterrupted episodes has now come to an end. Adult Swim has announced that the Rick and Morty season 5 finale will feature two-parts. While that’s certainly welcome news, those final two episodes won’t be coming for a few more weeks.

The two-part Rick and Morty season 5 finale will premiere Sunday, September 5 on Adult Swim at 11 p.m. It will air on Channel 4 in the U.K. on September 5 at 10 p.m. GMT. In announcing the news, Adult Swim also released a brief teaser for the final two episodes. Check it out below:

As you can see, Rick has whipped out his “Things That Are Better Than Morty Wheel.” While we do love the little guy, it’s hard to argue with the fact that “two crows” are indeed better than him. Did you know that crows like shiny gifts? And if you give them enough gifts they’ll be your friend and bring treasures they find back to you? Birds rule.

It’s unclear just how connected the final two episodes of Rick and Morty season 5 will be. Each has a very different title without a “Part 1” or “Part 2” designation. Episode 9 is titled “Forgetting Sarick Mortshall” while episode 10 is titled “Rickurmai Jack.” The episode descriptions don’t offer much insight either as 9 reads “Two Crows, broh. These guys are mad smart.” while 10 reads “Tryin something new, broh. Doin’ it big.”

Some Rick and Morty fans reported feeling underwhelmed by the two previous season finales due to that lack of investment in the series’ continuity. Based on the Birdperson-centric eight episode of season 5, the show does seem more interested in addressing its own “lore.” How will they feel about Rick “trying something new, broh”? Guess we’ll see in September!

Rick and Morty Season 5 was originally set to air 10 episodes over 10 weeks, but eight episodes through the season, Adult Swim surprisingly delayed the final two episodes of the season. Though the wait might have been frustrating, Rick and Morty fans have dealt with much worse waits for new episodes before (the over two-year hiatus between Seasons 3 and 4 being the longest so far).

The wait for the Season 5 finale isn't too long, and hopefully, the two-part conclusion is worth the wait. But regardless, let's break down what fans can expect from the Rick and Morty finale once it airs.

Why Was the Rick and Morty Season 5 Finale Delayed?

While no official reason has been given for the Rick and Morty Season 5 finale's delay, the most logical assumption is that there were production delays as a result of completing the season while working from home during a pandemic. There is also speculation based on the title and description that Season 5, Episode 10, "Rickmurai Jack," might be animated in a different style, inspired by either anime or Genndy Tartakovsky's Samurai Jack, which could've been extra time-consuming.

When Will Rick and Morty Season 5, Episode 9 Come Out?

Rick and Morty Season 5, Episode 9, "Forgetting Sarick Mortshall," is scheduled to air Sunday, September 5 at 11 PM ET/PT on Adult Swim. It will be followed immediately by Rick and Morty Season 5, Episode 10, "Rickmurai Jack," at 11:30 PM ET/PT.

What's the Rick and Morty Season 5 Finale about - and Who's in It?

Zap2It and All 4 offer different plot descriptions for the two back-to-back episodes concluding Rick and Morty Season 5. The Zap2It descriptions have a jokier tone and strenuously avoid any spoilers -- its description for "Forgetting Sarick Mortshall" reads "Two Crows, broh; these guys are mad smart," while its description for "Rickmurai Jack" reads "Tryin something new, broh; Doin' it big." All 4, in contrast, gives more straightforward plot summaries -- its description of "Forgetting Sarick Mortshall" is "Rick gets new sidekicks, while Morty makes a new friend," and its description of "Rickmurai Jack" is "Rick is living his best anime life, making new friends and taking down new enemies."

The commercials for the season finale seem to only include scenes from "Forgetting Sarick Mortshall," in which Rick gets frustrated with Morty messing with his portal fluid and, spinning a wheel of "Better things than Morty," officially replaces his sidekick with Two Crows, providing some context for the Zap2It description. How Morty responds to his replacement could end up proving the fan theories that Season 5 has been an Evil Morty origin story. It's unclear whether "Forgetting Sarick Mortshall" and "Rickmurai Jack" tell a continuous two-part story or if they're separate stories. But if it's the latter, it's likely that "Forgetting Sarick Mortshall" will be the official conclusion to Season 5's story and character arcs, whereas "Rickmurai Jack" will be "something new," possibly an anime or Samurai Jack homage.

Co-creator Justin Roiland will be playing both Rick and Morty as always, and while other characters haven't been shown in the promo, it seems safe to assume Chris Parnell as Jerry Smith, Spencer Grammer as Summer Smith and Sarah Chalke as Beth Smith will be back in their recurring roles. No guest stars have been announced for the Season 5 finale as of yet.

To see how the final two episodes play out, Season 5 of Rick and Morty concludes September 5 on Adult Swim.
