Dear Parents,

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to work with your child this year. My name is Eric Trevino and I will have the pleasure of working with your son/daughter for English Language Arts. I am looking forward to an exciting year and I am delighted to have your child in my class. This year we will have some fun and challenging tasks to help us reach our goals. We are going to work, play, and learn hard and have fun in the process. Through our daily interaction, we will learn and prove there is no "I" in "TEAM." Our class goal will be to work together towards a fantastic and successful school year! I have high expectations for all of my students and I am committed to assisting them with the expectations required of the course.

The format of our English class will be highly structured and will provide students with the flexibility to choose amongst various assignments and projects. In addition to regular projects and homework, I will be expecting all work assigned in class to be completed either during class or at home and turned in the following school day. While some assignments might require additional time for completion , students will be permitted to turn in those assignments they day after we finish working on the material in class . Also, in an effort to provide you and your child with a clear understanding of the grading matrix, students will receive a letter grade for assigned work measured by the rubric provided. Rubrics act as guidelines in letting your child know what is expected to earn each letter grade. Students will receive instruction on how the grading measure is based on said rubric. And mastery of the expectations will be reflected in a letter grade (i.e., A, B, C, D, etc.).

To ensure clarity and transparency, it is customary on the first day of class that I review the syllabus with students. The purpose of the review is to provide students with a clear understanding of classroom rules, policies, and expectations. During the discussion, I encourage students to ask questions and raise any concerns. Please encourage your child to ask questions, as it is important that all students thoroughly understand behavioral expectations and classroom procedures for the start and end of every class.

My primary goal is to keep students engaged and interested in English Language Arts. It is my personal belief that ELA is much more than grammar, spelling, literature, and poetry. English Language Arts is the vehicle we use to express ourselves, be it verbally or through written compositions; and without it, our wants, desires, aspirations and thoughts might not be fully communicated. ELA is a fundamental skill that must be utilized effectively in order to achieve our maximum aptitude in life.

In closing, I would like to express that one of the most important goals this year is to keep the lines of communication open between the parent(s) and teachers. Positive and productive communication is paramount to your child’s success! You are essentially my eyes and ears at home and if you notice your child struggling, encourage them to ask me questions either during or after class. Homework is intended to be challenging yet doable, not impossible nor impractical.

This year I look forward to collaborating with your son/daughter to ensure a positive and successful academic outcome for your child.

Although there are many benefits of writing an introductory letter, not many teachers know what exactly to write, to make a good impression on parents. Therefore, here is a sample for your reference, followed by guidelines to help you write an effective one yourself.

Guidelines

An introductory letter from a new teacher is a way of welcoming the students and parents to one’s class and hence, the tone of the letter should be very polite. The letter should make the students and parents excited for starting the new academic year with the teacher. However, teachers should see to it that the letter is written in a formal as well as a professional way.

In the beginning of the letter, the teacher should introduce herself to the parents by mentioning her educational background as well as her previous experience. The teacher can talk about where she attained her teacher’s degree from and how many years she has worked as a teacher in the same school or some other school. Mentioning whether the teacher was in some other profession before becoming a teacher is also a good idea. It is fine to write about the teacher’s additional qualifications and whether she is currently pursuing some course.

The next part of the letter should mention what the students and parents can expect during the academic year. Here, one can also mention one’s teaching style and talk briefly about the syllabus that will be covered during the year. One can also mention the activities that will be taking place in the class as well as in the school, like projects, picnics, educational trips, etc. This helps in developing the enthusiasm of students and they will surely look forward to start a new year in school. One can also discuss some specific things or concerns like homework, studies, etc., in this letter.

The letter must end by encouraging the parents to communicate with the teacher, if they feel the need to do so. It is important to mention the time during which parents can come to meet the teacher in the school. Mentioning the teacher’s e-mail id is a good way of telling parents that they can communicate with the teacher about any concern that they may feel necessary. Communication through e-mail makes the teacher-parent interaction easier.

My name is Karen Winget, lead fourth grade teacher and I am really glad to welcome you and your child to my classroom this year. I graduated from the University of California with major in English literature and later did my diploma in Early Childhood Education from the same University. I have taught in the Elementary grade for five years, though I have worked at Sunshine School for the past three years. I am interested in reading and have my blog which I see as a window to express my opinions. Apart from that, I am always on a quest to meet new people and learn about their language and culture.

I am looking forward to meeting as well as knowing each student of my class and their parents. This year will be a challenging one for your child as compared to last year, however, I will try to make the classes more interesting as well as easier, so that each child understands as well as enjoys them. Moreover, I do not just want to stick to academics. Rather, I am planning activities to develop the creative skills and interests of students.
