Changing your oil is basic maintenance, and on the 3.6, its super easy. First, make sure you have some things on hand.
*Rags
*Oil Drain Pan
*6 quarts of your favorite Motor oil
*Oil Filter
*13mm Socket
*24mm Socket
*Ratchet Wrench
*Small Extension
*Gloves
Its recommended to change the oil on a warm engine. Some trains of thought are a cold engine has all the crap in the oil at the bottom, so it all comes out. Others say the warm engine has all the crap suspended in the oil, and allows it to all comes out, rather than sit on the bottom of the pan. I change the oil on a warmed up engine. After getting it up to operating temp, I let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
Take your engine cover off and set it aside where you wont trip over it:

My fluid of choice is Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, and an OEM Filter.

PLEASE NOTE:

The filters for a 2012 - 2013 are different than for a 2014 and up 3.6. The 2012-2013 use MOPAR Part Number MO-744:

The 2014 and up use MOPAR Part Number MO-349:

MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING THE CORRECT FILTER.
Loosen the Oil Filer Cap, and using the 13mm socket and ratchet, remove the Oil Drain Plug:

While its draining, Lets change the Filter. Find the Filter Canister. I place a rag around it to prevent oil from getting on the engine if I spill.

Using the 24mm socket and ratchet, loosen and remove the Filter Canister Cap. The Filter will be attached to it, and come out when you pull the cap off.

Remove the old filter and remove the Gasket on the cap, and replace with the new one that comes with the new filter. Be sure to rub some oil on it before installing it on the cap.

Install the new filter. It will make a "Click" when its seated properly.

Install the new filter and cap back on the Jeep. Torque the cap to 18 Ft./Lbs. Don't over tighten, as it can crack the housing and leak.

Re install the Drain plug on the oil pan, and torque to 20 Ft./Lbs. Don't over tighten, as you can strip the threads.

I keep a couple empty bottles from each oil change for using the residual oil in them to lube the gasket on the filter canister, and then cut the bottom for a nice, tight fitting funnel!

Add 6 Quarts of your favorite oil, and tighten the filler cap.
Bonus Tip: With the additives in most oils, shake the bottles really good before dumping them into the engine. This ensures the additives are mixed into the oil, and not stuck to the sides....bottom, whatever.

Fire the engine up for a few minutes, and check for leaks. After you shut it off, check the level.

Make sure you put the engine cover back on!! (Ive driven off without it on a few occasions )

Take your used oil to a local Oil Recycling drop off.

NOW.....You need to reset your Oil Change Indicator.
To do this:
Turn the ignition switch to the on/run position but do not start the engine.
Fully depress the accelerator pedal slowly 3 times within 10 seconds.
Turn the ignition switch back to the off/lock position
And youre done!
Doing this yourself is easy, fast, and gives you the opportunity to examine the underside components of your Jeep. Check Drive Shafts, leaks, and for anything that looks out of place.

Run full synthetic in all my vehicles. Starts easier, smoother during winter seasons and revs much nicer with the MT. Bumps the OCI a bit and go to Walmart for the best everyday price.

Great DIY Chris4x4. After owning my XJ for 14 years. Of coarse numerous oil changes on my back. Was cool to find out filter was up top in my JK.. Pain in the ass lining up drain pan and filter on the Cherokee. Love this JK oil change now. Lol.Just one so far. But man.....what a difference. No more screw on filters for me.
Also, I've been using full synthetic oils since Mobil 1 came out with theirs. Used it first in my Yamaha Virago. Noticed the difference after 2 oil changes. Stuck with full syn's since. And you can say what you want about Walmart. Yes, there are some.....umm....different customers in their stores. But have to agree with aggrex. Their prices are fantastic. Ex: just picked up a name brand air filter for 10 bucks less than my local auto parts place.
Again. AWESOME DIY Chris 4x4. And just a side not. I happen to notice you hide your face where ever possible. Are there a few Wanted Posters out there for you? Or just camera shy.

Ok....back to Chris4x4 post. And it is an awesome post. The time he put into this post. Takes us less time to do the actual work. And I applaud his effort. This is an awesome forum. And I hope we can keep it going good.
On that thought. I would just like to add my 2 cents.
Chris4x4 mentioned several times using your favorite oil. My favorite these days. The cheapest full synthetic at my favorite Walmart. And not a no name brand. Quaker State, Penzoil, etc. I always pick up a name brand.
Back to my point. Back in the 60s and 70s we use to push a heavier weight oils thru older motors that may have lost compression. And in some cases, it did work. But with today's motors. You will only hurt your motor. If your jeep requires 5 w 20. Then use that oil. Be it full syn. Or regular oil. One of the worse things you can do to your motor. Is ask it to push thru a heavy weight oil thru the small and very tight clearances with various engine components. An oil that the manufacture doesn't recommend. Stick to what the manufacturer reccomends. Don't mean to repeat myself. But I will. Use what the Manufacturer suggests. Be it full sync. Or regular oil. Don't use a heavier weight oil.

Again, Chris great write-up! Your JK is older than mine and my OCD kicked in when I saw that rusty oil pan. Perhaps a quick rattlecan shot of flat black?

I’m a rookie in this department. Think I’ll try my first oil change myself next time I need one thanks to this step by step tutorial. Oil filter needs to be changed every time correct? And Castrol ok for name brand? How much on average can I save doing my own oil changes?
