How to transfer photos from icloud to usb

A friend mentioned to me tonight that she’d love to learn both how to access the cloud and how to get pictures from the cloud to a thumb drive. Here are (hopefully) simple instructions for accessing photos in the cloud and downloading them to put on a thumb drive.

There are a few steps in solving this problem. See below for more details on each step.
1. Determine in which cloud are your photos stored in. (iCloud, Google Photos, Dropbox, etc)
2. Access your cloud storage location from a workstation (PC, Mac, Chromebook, etc) with a USB port for a thumb drive.
3. Plug in thumb drive and download photos from iCloud to the thumb drive.

STEP 1
Determining in which cloud your photos are stored

The location of your cloud photos is typically determined by the kind of phone you use — assuming, of course, that you use your phone to take most of the pictures you’d hope to find in the cloud. In my friend’s case, she had an iPhone. Most iPhones are set up to automatically back up photos to iCloud, so that’s a pretty easy answer.

If you use an Android phone (like me), your photos typically go to the Google cloud and are stored in Google photos under your account. The instructions below are specifically for accessing photos in iCloud, but many of the details will be similar. (Perhaps I can write another article soon for Android users.)

STEP 2
Accessing your cloud storage from a workstation with USB port

Once you’ve determined that your photos are stored in iCloud, you’ll want to access your iCloud account at https://www.icloud.com. (NOTE: I recommend using Chrome for this if possible, as it can greatly simplify the downloads in Step 3.)

Log in with your iPhone username and password. (NOTE: If you’re not sure of your username, go to Settings on your iPhone and scroll down to iCloud; you’ll see your username there.)

Once you’ve logged into iCloud, you’ll see a screen similar to the screenshot below. Once you’ve accessed this page, select Photos. You’ll see a list of your photos here.

iCloud home page

STEP 3
Download photos to your thumb drive.

NOTES:

  • I recommend using the Chrome browser for this step, if at all possible. During my testing, it seemed to be the simplest for downloading multiple photos.
  • If you’re not sure what a USB port looks like, or how to plug a thumb drive into the port, these instructions may be useful.

Once you have the thumb drive plugged in, go to your iCloud Photos page, then click Select Photos in the middle right of the top bar.

Start by selecting just one photo and clicking Download.

Select your USB disk on your computer — note that the drive letter may not be E:. Just look for USB Disk and select that. You may wish to create a specific folder on your thumb drive for the photos, or you can simply add them directly to the drive.

Now go back to iCloud photos and select the rest of your photos, then select Download. Please note that each photo will open a separate window for downloading. (This is very unfortunate in my opinion, but I have not yet found a workaround.) If you’re using Chrome and you already saved one photo to your USB thumb drive, all of these windows will have the thumb drive as the default download location, so all you have to do is click OK — or just hit Enter — for each window.

And now you should be good to go! Just use the safe disconnect option for your thumb drive if possible, and take those photos wherever you need to take them.

Apple iCloud is the primary backup storage for iOS, and photos saved on iPhone are usually synced to iCloud automatically as long as your device is connected to a stable Wi-Fi connection.
