How to stop unwanted phone calls on landline

Want to trace a call or block specific numbers? You can do that and more with the following star codes. Just enter the code on your phone’s keypad, exactly as you would when making a regular phone call.

Other ways to stop nuisance calls:

  • Add your number to the free National Do Not Call Registry by calling 888.382.1222 or going to www.donotcall.gov.
  • Stop political calls by asking callers to remove your number from their lists. Get more info at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) website.
  • Halt debt collection calls by asking them to stop calling if you’re not the person they’re looking for. If you already asked them to stop and they continue, call the FTC at 877.382.4357 or file a complaint online.

  • Do note that the DNC Registry does not cover:
  • Marketing messages or calls from organisations with whom you have an ongoing relationship, if the messages are about products or services that are relevant to you. However, you may opt out from receiving such telemarketing messages and the organisation must stop sending such messages to your Singapore telephone number after 21 calendar days;
  • Messages that are part of a market survey or research; 
  • Messages related to charitable or religious causes;
  • Personal messages sent by individuals;
  • Public messages sent by government agencies;
  • Political messages; or
  • Telemarketing calls or messages sent to a business (i.e. B2B). 

Unlicensed Money Lending Messages

Licensed moneylenders can only advertise on their website and business premises. If you receive SMSes or WhatsApp messages from loansharks:

  • a) Do not reply or interact with the sender.
  • b) Notify the Police via i-Witness.
  • c) Report the number as “spam” and block it.

You may also call the National Crime Prevention Council’s X-Ah Long hotline at 1800-924-5664 to report loanshark activities anonymously.

Robo Calls

  • Do not answer calls from unknown numbers. 
  • If you happen to answer such a call, hang up immediately. Do not reply to any question or respond to instructions to press any button on your phone. 
  • Never give out personal data such as your NRIC number, bank account number or any other identifying information in response to unexpected or suspicious calls.
  • If you get a call from someone who says they represent a company or a government agency, verify the authenticity of the call. Hang up and call the organisation’s phone number on your account statement or the organisation’s website. 
  • Do not divulge information under pressure.

Tools Available

  • The ScamShield app blocks known scam callers in a list managed by National Crime Prevention Council and the Police. It also uses an on-device algorithm to filter SMSes sent by unknown persons to the junk folder.
  • Consider using other third party apps with similar functions to block unwanted calls and messages, e.g. Messages and Phone by Google, Calls Blacklist, Hiya, Call Control.

How do I block an unwanted caller on my landline?

Dial *60 on your landline phone to stop unwanted calls from a specific phone number. Dial *77 to turn on Anonymous Call Rejection on your landline and wait to hear the three beeps. This means that any calls that come through as Private, Blocked or Anonymous will be blocked.

Does * 61 block unwanted calls?

Block calls from your phone Receive an unwanted call? Press *61 to add the last call received to your call block list. Press *80 to turn call blocking off. Press *60 to turn call blocking back on.
