I'm paying $632/yr for full coverage on my '97 NA here in Michigan - nearly 5 times that of cduplain in our neighboring state. I had full coverage because my OTM was totaled in April, and it wasn't much more to add collision & comp to this car in case anything happened to it. My '16 Focus costs $1232/yr. And I'm guessing I'm the OP's parents' age.

However the biggest part of the premium on each vehicle (or each of my vehicles, anyway) is Personal Injury Protection, or PIP. It is state-mandated here in Michigan and is meant to provide for payment of medical and/or work loss benefits if you are injured in an auto accident, for life, with no maximum cap. It makes up over half of the total premium on each vehicle, regardless of what car you drive (new or old), regardless of how it's driven (pleasure or commute), and regardless of how it's covered (PLPD or full coverage). We therefore enjoy among the highest, if not THE highest, auto insurance premiums in at least the continental US.

The average driver should plan on paying around $1,630 yearly to insure a Miata, which equates to around $136 a month. Collision coverage costs approximately $714 a year, liability and medical payments insurance is around $484, and the remaining comprehensive will cost around $432.
