History

In 1886, Dr. John S. Pemberton created a carbonated soft drink made from mixing flavored syrup and carbonated water, which can then be sold at soda fountains in Atlanta, Georgia. While Dr. Pemberton created the carbonated drink, Frank M. Robinson, his partner and bookkeeper, is credited for the Coca-Cola name and its distinctive script. The script and name, by the way, are trademarked and thus protected under international copyright laws; these are still in use today, more than 130 years after their creation.

But such success didn’t come easily. When it was first sold, Coca-Cola was sold for five cents per glass and only nine glasses were sold, on average, in Atlanta during the first year of its release. But as word spread, the sales gradually increased. Today, as many as 1.9 billion daily servings of Coke are consumed worldwide – and that’s what makes it the #1 sparkling beverage globally, even with stiff competition from its closest rival.

By the way, Coca-Cola drinks are under license by the eponymous The Coca-Cola Company. Basically, the multinational corporation produces the concentrate used in the manufacture of its signature drink. The concentrate is sold to licensed bottlers around the world, with each bottler granted exclusive territory contracts. The bottlers produce the finished products, which are available in cans, glass bottles, and PET bottles, before distribution to supermarkets, restaurants, and groceries, among other venues.

The concentrate, furthermore, is combined with many other ingredients including sweeteners and filtered water.  According to the company, the concentrate’s specific formulation is different from the original formula developed by Dr. Pemberton.
