Geschreven bij The Mark of Athena
Ik weet niet goed of ik deze review in het Engels of in het Nederlands moet schrijven. Nederlands, waarschijnlijk. Hoe dan ook, hier is de review.
Dit boek is geweldig! Rick Riordan is één van de weinige fantasy-schrijvers die het begrip 'humor' kent. De Percy Jackson serie was al goed, maar dit is
beter. Het is duidelijk dat Rick het makkelijker vindt om gevoelens te beschrijven als het verhaal in de derde persoon geschreven is. De personages hebben diepgang, wat ik een beetje miste in de serie van Percy. Rick Riordan heeft namelijk de vervelende neiging om de bijpersonages zwart-wit te laten, stereotype. Daarom zijn de verschillende point-of-views ook zo fijn.
Die zijn trouwens ook gelijk een minpunt. Vier hoofdstukken lang door hetzelfde personage is saai. Hierdoor worden
gebeurtenissen altijd vanuit het oogpunt van één bepaalt persoon verteld, wat afdoet aan het effect dat de schrijver wilt creëren door de verschillende viewpoints: verschillende personages hun mening laten geven over een bepaalde gebeurtenis.
Er is naast emotie ook meer dan genoeg actie. Soms zijn de oplossingen voor die problemen zo belachelijk dat je spontaan moet lachen, net zoals sommige andere dingen die bloedserieus worden genomen. Ik bedoel, Romeinen die de toekomst voorspellen door de
vulling van knuffels te lezen, kom op!
Ook zijn de mythes, zoals gewoonlijk, weer heel goed verweven met de moderne tijd. Dat lijkt me echt heel moeilijk om te doen, dus petje af.
