How many catalytic converters does a jeep cherokee have

What is a catalytic converter?

A catalytic converter converts the harmful exhaust gases produced by the engine into less harmful emissions before they leave the vehicle's exhaust system.

The catalytic converter looks similar to a muffler. It is typically a stainless steel housing with a ceramic honeycomb inside that is full of platinum, palladium and rhodium. These elements help clean up harmful exhaust gases that otherwise would be expelled from the tail pipe.

How does the catalytic converter work?

The catalytic converter has multiple sections, commonly referred to as beds. Each contains specific catalyst elements that work at a temperature of at least 400 degrees F to promote specific chemical reactions. This converts harmful CO, HC, and NOx exhaust gases into less harmful CO2, H2O, and N gases that are released from the vehicle's exhaust pipe.

A failing catalytic converter can cause a vehicle to fail emissions tests and turn on the check engine light. The exhaust might have an unusual smell. A restricted catalytic converter can result in a loss of engine power.

Can I drive with a catalytic converter problem?

If black smoke is coming from the exhaust, you should not drive the vehicle. This would indicate unburned fuel entering the converter, which can damage it.

How often do catalytic converters need to be replaced?

If the engine is running properly, the catalytic converter should last the life of the vehicle. When it fails, it's commonly caused by too much raw fuel entering the converter, often as a result of a misfiring engine. Too much unburned fuel can coat the catalyst, causing the converter to stop working. The converter can also overheat and break apart inside, becoming restricted or plugged.

The catalytic converter is covered by the vehicle's emissions warranty, which extends beyond the manufacturer's factory warranty.  Along with other emission control devices, federal law requires manufacturers to replace a defective converter for up to 15 years or 150,000 miles. Because this coverage varies by state and vehicle type, refer to your owner’s manual for your warranty information.

In an effort to offer our customers the best of all worlds, we offer flexible warranty selection for most of our items.

90 days ( GOOD ) - this selection is chosen most by used car dealerships, individuals that are not expecting to keep their vehicles, or budget minded individuals.  The item is still constructed from top quality materials, simply discounted to reflect the limited warranty period and offer the customer the lowest possible price. Converters with this warranty are still constructed using OBD2 cores to ensure no premature check engine light and what the market would refer to as a standard grade OBD2 unit.

1 year / 35,000km ( BETTER ) - this is our most popular selection. These products come with a full 1yr warranty or 35,000km against manufacturer defects with unlimited mileage. Converters with this warranty feature a premium loaded OBD2 converter core with higher precious metals loading and/or a larger amount of substrate internally. Additionally, extensive use of 409 stainless steel tubing is used in these products for even longer life; these items are designed to last beyond the industry standard.

2 year / 70,000km ( BEST ) - this is our premium line of exhaust products. Converters selected with this warranty (  2years or 70,000km )  feature a very highly loaded catalytic converter core and generally full stainless steel tubing construction. These are also know as our OEM grade units. These units feature either increase substrate volume or highly loaded California grade internal substrates and protective matting. Although not inherently California legal, the internal substrate is designed based on their standards. The result is a product that will last and perform for many many years.

There is NO warranty on converters that are melted, cracked, broken, overheated, or physical damages. We do not cover installation and or issue labor refunds. All items ship in perfectly working condition. Please see our info section as to why converters fail and what to do to prevent damaging your new product. For all warranty claims the item must either be shipped back first OR a core deposit must be paid until old unit is returned. WARRANTY IS FOR REPLACEMENT ONLY NOT REFUND.  For ANY warranty to be valid, proof of O2 sensor replacement at the time of converter replacement is required.  This is the leading cause of initial converter failure.

DO NOT be fooled by sellers that advertise '5yr' or 'Lifetime' warranty Catalytic Converters. In most cases this refers to perforation of the converter body only, nothing else. Since our converter bodies are stainless steel there is NO chance of rust-through.
