The battery in my Toyota died a couple of days ago. I know it's possible to recharge a dead battery, but how long does it take? The car and the battery are both past their sell-by date, and I’m looking to get a new car very soon, so I don't see the point in buying a new battery for a car I’m hoping to scrap. How long will it take to fully charge my dead car battery?

However, if you just want to boost your battery enough to start the engine, it would take about 2-4 hours—or, if possible, you can use another vehicle to jumpstart your battery.

The two most common ways of recharging a car’s battery are through idling or using a trickle charger. Idling is the simplest way to recharge since it doesn’t require any extra equipment; all you have to do is turn your car on and let it sit—but remember, if your goal is to charge your battery fully, you’re looking at letting your car idle for hours. Which battery charger do I need?

The multi-stage battery charger works in bursts of power instead of a continuous charge. This is better for the battery cells, and prevents long-term damage that can be done by the linear batteries during the continuous charging.

What is a trickle charger?

Trickle chargers operate between 0.8 and 4 amps. They run at a low power output level and are not meant for charging a battery when it goes dead. However, they are useful in preventing the problem if you connect it to the battery when the vehicle isn’t being used.

Car batteries usually hold 48 amps, so it will take about 12 hours to reach a full charge using a 12 volt charger. It takes around 30 minutes for an electric vehicle to charge to 80%.
