It depends on the type of material your dentist uses, but it should only be a short time until the cement is fully set. You should be able to leave the office and eat. But make sure you ask your dentist at the time because different materials have different set times.

If it's just a crown cemented on a normal tooth usually it's fine with in an hour with modern cements. If you had an implant done with a crown placed at the same appointment then you may have to take care not to put too much force on it for sometime. You need to check with the doctor that placed it. It depends on how solid the bone is that the implant was placed in.

The usual for a crown being cemented is that you can eat most foods after an hour. You can also brush normally after an hour. With the cements that I use, you will want to treat the tooth like a temporary crown for the first 24 hours, meaning avoiding chewy and sticky foods and if you floss, floss toward your gums then pull out to the side, do not pull back toward the biting surface until that same time the next day. As a side note, my cements say you can drink anything you like after 15 minutes, however my patients tell me that it is cement flavored for 45 minutes. So just giving you the flavor warning that you might not want your favorite flavored beverage until after that time.

Most times you can eat after 30-60 minutes. Try to avoid chewing gum or "sticky" foods like fudge, caramel, jelly beans, etc., for a few weeks.
