If you mute someone's stories, you won't see their story at the top of your feed. Muting someone's story is different from unfollowing them and from muting their profile. You'll still see their posts in feed.

As discussed above, when someone mutes you on Instagram, they will no longer be able to view your stories because your stories will not appear in their stories section. So you can keep a check on your story views and see if they are present in your story viewers.
