I knew this listing was a "used" book, but I looked at the condition definition which I believe was "good", which was something like "a few marks". And I was hoping it was Jackie Mathews crosswords. My hopes were dashed on both counts. First, there is the outline of a crossword on the cover - and that's it for crosswords. It really is just the kind of word puzzles I don't really care for. Like start with one word and end up with another just by changing one letter. Look for words within words. Write the word from the description and then read column x for another word. Build a daisy. Add letters to make two words out of a suffix and a prefix. Second, if having most of the puzzles already solved is "good" condition, it was an accurate description.

But the really good thing is that it was inexpensive and there were a few puzzles not done. And the ones done were in pencil. So it goes to charity. Again.

I have purchased from thrift stores (and probably ThriftBooks) before and normally have a good experience. Just less than optimal for this one. But this is a review about the book, not the store.

Jackie Mathews has been creating crosswords for more than two decades for newspapers and other publications across the country. She also produces sudokus and word-search puzzles, in addition to medical crosswords, TV crosswords, and general-themed crosswords. She has written for Dell Magazines for the last 30 years.

Jackie’s interest in crosswords began as a child and was no doubt influenced by her parents, who both enjoyed crossword puzzles. She graduated from California State University, Long Beach, with a B.A. in English. She founded Puzzle Features Syndicate in 1989. She tries to inject humor into some of her clues, rather than always being bound by dictionary definitions. As a crossword puzzle solver herself, she believes that funny and unusual clues make a puzzle much more enjoyable.

For many years, Jackie’s husband, Mat, assisted her in creating puzzles. He, unfortunately, passed away in 2003. She is the author of four books of word puzzles, which were published during the ’90s by Random House, Inc. She is a native Southern Californian and now resides in Everett, Wash.
