Introduction

This guide shows how to rebuild a primer style carburetor on a Briggs and Stratton quantum engine. The guide is applicable to many different models and brands of mowers.

This engine can be found on push mowers, log splitters, tillers, leaf vacs, leaf blowers, tractors, and more. It is applicable to 4.5-8 horsepower engines. A carburetor rebuild is required after fuel is left in a mower over a long period of time or water has gotten into the fuel.

    • Remove the air filter cover and air filter. This is done by removing the screw at the top of the filter housing.

    • The screw itself is a flat head, as well as a 5/16 socket.

    • Some engines may be equipped with a throttle cable. Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the cable.

    • If your engine is not equipped with a throttle, skip this step.

    • Remove the fuel line clamp with pliers. Crimp the line with locking pliers, or bend to 180 degrees to crimp the fuel line.

    • If the fuel in the tank contains water, or is extremely old, drain it into a container and dispose of it properly.

    • To remove the carb, use a 3/8 socket with extension and ratchet.

    • Turn the carb 90 degrees, and pull off of the Z bend in the carb linkage.

    • Drain the fuel into a container, and dispose of properly.

    • After the removal of the carb. the next step is to remove the carb bowl. This requires a 1/2 socket, and ratchet.

    • After removal, empty the leftover fuel into a container.

    • Spray the carb out with carb cleaner. After sprayng the carb off, remove the float pin. This will result in the float and needle being able to be pulled off as a whole.

    • This is not a carb cleaning, this is just a general rinse off.

    • These are the three major spots to spray out. If carb spray does not pass through, take a small piece of wire, and poke it through all the passages. Then spray out with carb cleaner again.

    • Finally, after all parts are clean and sprayed off, lay them out to ensure you are ready to reassemble.

Conclusion

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.

How do I identify a Briggs and Stratton carburetor?

How Do I Identify a Briggs & Stratton Engine? The Model, Type and Code numbers, stamped directly into the engine, are used to identify our engines. Engines used in lawn mower applications usually have the model numbers stamped directly into the blower housing, muffler heat shield, or a few inches above the spark plug.

Where do the springs go on a Briggs and Stratton carburetor?

The governor primary and secondary springs both clip to the loop in the governor throttle arm linkage. The throttle lever is located on the throttle lever control bracket in front of the carburetor.

Why is my Briggs and Stratton not getting fuel?

If you have last season's gas in your mower, drain your fuel tank and fill with fresh gas. Other possible causes include: Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace.
