Best overall luggage for international travel- Travelpro Maxlite 5 Expandable Luggage

The Travelpro Maxlite 5 Expandable Spinner suitcase is my personal recommendation of the best suitcase on this list and is also voted as the best international suitcase overall by a number of product review guides online.

This suitcase is made from polyester with a Duraguard coating which means that it has an extra water repellent and stain-resistant coating.

When travelling internationally, you want to ensure that your case is kept in as good condition as possible, as you don’t want to it to become dented, broken or wet while you’re travelling far from home.

Furthermore, the Travelpro Maxlite case is a good, sturdy size and it can even be expanded up to another 5cm so you can fit even more inside your case.

This is another great feature suited to international travel, especially if you’re prone to bringing lots of souvenirs back from the holiday with you!

    What we also love

I like how this suitcase is available in a variety of different colors (pink, blue, brown, grey and black).

While the style and color of a suitcase have no significant impact on its performance, it is nice to know that the Travelpro Maxlite performs well and looks good!

    What’s not great

The only slight downside that I’ve heard about this luggage is that its handle can sometimes be a little temperamental and get stuck when trying to slide it back into place.

However, if this issue does occur with any suitcase you purchase, check out the section at the bottom of this guide on how to look after your luggage and make it last longer!

    Pros

    • Stain and water resistant
    • Durable and lightweight
    • Lots of useful pockets

    Cons

    • Handle can sometimes be temperamental

Best backpack for international travel- Tortuga Outbreaker 35L luggage

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel
    Credit: tortugabackpacks.com

If you’re looking for the best backpack to take on your next international adventure, the Outbreaker from Tortuga comes highly recommended.

For one, it is made by experienced travelers who have in turn used their experiences and skills to create a practical and versatile backpack for travelers.

    What’s more?

This bad boy is carry-on compliant.

Measuring 20 x 13 x 8 inches, and weighing just 4.5 lb, the Outbreaker is sized for international carry-on and is sure to fit in the overhead bin of most airlines.

Also, the Tortuga Outbreaker 35L carries a lot—but not too much.

To avoid excess baggage fees, most airlines limit carry-on bags to 45 liters or less.

The Outbreaker 35L meets this requirement with ease, but it also has enough space to store everything you need for a long trip.

With 35 liters of space, this bag can hold enough clothes for a five-day trip, plus all of your other essentials like toiletries, electronics, and travel documents.

The Outbreaker is comfortable to wear.

Thanks to the padded shoulder straps and removable hip belt, carrying a heavy load doesn’t have to be a pain.

Additionally, the included load lifters and sternum strap help distribute the weight evenly, making it more comfortable to carry for extended periods.

Whether you’re exploring a new city on foot or taking a long bus ride to your next destination, the bag will help you get there with ease.

Additionally, the Outbreaker keeps your things organized, so you can find what you need when you need it.

The last thing you want when you’re trying to catch a flight is to be fumbling around in your bag for your passport or boarding pass.

With the Outbreaker’s multiple compartments and pockets, everything has its place, including a separate section for your laptop so you can quickly and easily find what you need.

Plus, the main compartment opens like a suitcase—so packing and unpacking is a breeze.

    What we also love

Another feature I appreciate is that it’s made with high-quality materials.

The Outbreaker is made with durable sailcloth fabric that can withstand even the roughest treatment—so it will keep all your belongings safe no matter where your travels take you.

And because it’s made with water-resistant fabric, you don’t have to worry about your belongings getting wet if you get caught in a rainstorm.

The lockable zippers also give you more confidence when traveling as it’d be much harder for others to get into your backpack without permission.

    What’s not great

If I have to mention the disadvantage of this bag, it has to be the cost.

The Outbreaker backpack is relatively expensive compared to other options on the market.

Furthermore, this bag is not expandable. So if you need more storage, I suggest you go for the Outbreaker 45L.

Overall, the Tortuga Outbreaker backpack is the best backpack for international travel and comes with a lifetime warranty, so you can rest assured knowing that your investment is protected.

    Pros

    • Meets carry-on size limits
    • Comfortable
    • Has many pockets and compartments
    • Sturdy and water-resistant
    • Lockable for added security

    Cons

    • Expensive
    • Not expandable

    Specs

    • Capacity: 35L
    • Dimensions: 20 x 13 x 8 inches
    • Weight: 4.5 lbs
    • Luggage type: backpack

Best hardside luggage for international travel- Samsonite Omni PC Hardside Luggage

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

For one of the best pieces of luggage for international travel that combines a lightweight design with sturdy and durable materials, then look no further than the Samsonite Omni PC Hardside Spinner.

The exterior of this suitcase is made from polycarbonate materials.

This means that it’s scratch-resistant thanks to the micro-diamond texture of the polycarbonate.

As you can imagine, this is a great feature for international travel when the luggage is likely to be thrown around at the airport quite a bit.

You can rest assured that your bag will be kept safe.

When traveling internationally, you want to make sure that your suitcase will be safe when in transportation to and from the airport.

Plus while it’s circulating around the different systems inside the airport.

Thanks to the Samsonite Omni’s TSA lockon the side, you can rest assured that your bag will be kept safe and secure for the whole journey.

A TSA lock is a Transportation Security Administration lock which means that it can only be opened by TSA agents at U.S. airports.

It’s not easy to break into so if your case gets stolen, so no one else will be able to gain access to it.

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

    What we also love

I also enjoy the fact that this case comes in a choice of 11 different colors and shades, which means you can pick one out that suits you and that you’ll easily recognize as it comes around the luggage conveyor belt at the airport!

    Plus the bag is affordable.

    What’s not great

One slightly negative aspect that I’ve heard about this suitcase is that the handle can sometimes be a little flimsy when trying to pull it up or push it down.

One way to prevent this from happening is to be as gentle as you can when lifting the handle up or down.

Also, remember to never lift the suitcase by the top handle; always use the side one as this is much stronger as it’s attached to the shell of the case as it helps to spread the weight more evenly when lifting it!

    Pros

    • Great spinner wheels
    • Sturdy and durable material
    • Comes with a TSA lock for added security

    Cons

    • The handle can be a little flimsy

    Specs

    • Weight: 5.29kg
    • Dimensions: 72h x 54w x 34d cm
    • Wheels: 4
    • Hard or soft material: hard shell

Best softside luggage for international travel- Samsonite Solyte DLX Expandable Luggage

If you’re looking for a soft-side suitcase that ticks all the boxes, go with the Samsonite Solyte DLX.

For one, this is one of the lightest pieces of soft side luggage on the market, making it ideal for international travel.

It’s made with a water-resistant polyester fabric that is both strong and lightweight, so you don’t have to worry about it being too heavy to carry or easily damaged.

The Samsonite Solyte DLX is also built to last, with a reinforced frame and robust zippers.

Plus, it’s backed by Samsonite’s reputation for quality and durability, so you can rest assured that your belongings will be safe and sound no matter where your travels take you.

It also has a lot of compartments, which come in handy when you’re trying to organize everything you need for your trip.

There’s a place for your clothes, your toiletries, and anything else you might need while on the go.

The bag also has a WetPak pocket that’s perfect for holding liquids without worrying about leaks or spills.

And if you happen to overpack, no worries!

The suitcase expands up to 2 inches, giving you extra space for souvenirs or last-minute items.

    What we also love

In addition, the DLX comes with a host of other features that make it perfect for international travel.

It has 4 smooth rolling wheels for easy maneuverability, push-button locking telescopic handle, and an external USB port so you can charge your phone or tablet on the go.

    What’s not great

I was however disappointed to see that it does not have a dedicated laptop compartment.

This could be a problem if you are looking for a bag that will protect your laptop from damage.

I was also surprised to see that the TSA-friendly lock is not included in the purchase price.
This could be a deal breaker for some people who want to be able to lock their luggage for security purposes.

Overall, if you’re looking for the best soft-sided luggage for international travel, look no further than the Samsonite Solyte DLX.

Its lightweight design, expandable storage, and durable construction make it the perfect choice for your next trip abroad.

    Pros

    • Expandable
    • Lightweight and durable
    • Multidirectional wheels

Best luggage for business travel- Monos Carry-On Pro

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel
    Credit: monos.com

The Monos Carry-On Pro is the perfect suitcase for business travelers.

It comes with a built-in front compartment that has three interior pockets and zippered pouches that are perfect for storing 15” laptops, tablets, important documents, phones, batteries, cables, passports, sunglasses, or other small items.

This allows you to have all of your tech accessories in one place, and within easy reach, especially during security or check-ins requiring travel documents.

As a result, you can travel knowing that all of your important belongings are safe with you.

    What’s more?

This luggage comes with some organizational features you’ll love.

There is a built-in compression pad, an anti-microbial laundry bag, and two shoe bags.

You can tuck your shoes away at the zipped panel while the compression straps will keep your clothes compact and snug so nothing falls out!

The Monos Carry-on Pro is also very durable luggage.

The water-resistant German Makrolon polycarbonate shell used in the construction of the suitcase is top-quality and durable.

This means that during your trip, your items won’t be soaked through during rainfall, and the bag is also sturdy enough to withstand the rigors of travel.

The adjustable telescopic handle and whisper-quiet wheels make it easy to maneuver the suitcase around airports and other busy areas.

This was one feature about this bag that Elle of Travelswithelle loved.

According to her, rolling anywhere is such a bliss, even on bumpy sidewalks, dirt pathways, and even carpeted hallways!

    Credit: monos.com

    What we also love

Another reason why I think the Carry-on Pro is great for international business travel is that it is sleek and modern.

Its timeless and minimalist aesthetic means it would blend with any outfit you wear while looking good enough to go on your Instagram feed.

And the vegan leather details add a touch of luxury.

Also, this bag comes with a lifetime warranty.

Plus, Monos offer a 100-day trial to ensure your new suitcase is the right travel companion for you.

This means that when you purchase this suitcase, you can try it out for up to 100 days and if you don’t like it, you can return it.

    What’s not great

So, what are the drawbacks of the Monos Carry-On Pro?

Based on the reviews on their website and blog posts, I found that the major gripe customers have is that it can be hard to close the exterior laptop case if you have packed too many things into the main compartment.

To avoid this, I suggest you do not overstuff the main compartment or the tech compartment so that the bag can zip up easily.

Another common complaint has to do with scuff marks on the exterior of the suitcase after a few uses.

However, some users like Hannah Freedman of Insider, found that using erasers helps in removing the marks.

All in all, if you’re looking for a top-of-the-line carry-on suitcase that will make your next international trip a breeze, the Monos Carry-On Pro is worth considering.

    Pros

    • Laptop compartment
    • Highly organized
    • Durable
    • Sleek and stylish
    • Lifetime warranty + 100-day trial

    Cons

    • The laptop compartment zipper won’t close when the bag is overstuffed
    • Scratch marks from use

Best luxury luggage for international travel- Briggs and Riley Baseline Spinner Luggage

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

While I mentioned above that style isn’t a contributing factor when it comes to the quality of luggage, there are some brands that perform well in both style and practicality.

One of those brands is Briggs and Riley, and their Baseline Spinner suitcase is a particularly good winner when it comes to the most luxurious luggage.

Despite being the most expensive luggage on this list by quite some distance, it certainly packs a punch when it comes to its features.

The Baseline Spinner has a CX expansion system, which means that you can expand the suitcase by up to 34%.

This gives you plenty of more room for those much-needed holiday clothes and souvenirs!

This type of technology is just one of the features that make the Briggs and Riley Baseline Spinner suitcase stand out from its competitors.

    What we also love

The case is made from ballistic nylon fabric on the outside, which protects and resists stains, water, and general wear and tear.

For a suitcase as expensive as this one, you want all the protection you can get against it becoming damaged!

The Baseline Spinner case is also fitted with a hybrid fiberglass frame which provides additional support for durability and flexibility.

This means you can rest assured that it’s not going to become flimsy or dented, just because you’ve packed a little too much in your case!

    What’s not great
Of course, the major downside to this suitcase is its hefty price tag.

However, if you’re looking to invest in one of the best items of luggage for international travel, then this suitcase is definitely a strong contender and worth the money in my opinion.

    Pros

    • CX expansion system for more room inside
    • Water and stain resistance
    • Strong and durable frame

    Cons

    • Very expensive

    Specs

    • Weight: 4kg

    • Wheels: 4
    • Hard or soft material: soft
    • Warranty: lifetime

Best luggage for international travel under $100- AmazonBasics 21-inch Hardside Spinner

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel
    Credit: amazon.com

The Amazon Basics 21-inch Suitcase is easily one of the best luggage for international travel especially if you are after an affordable option.

Below, I will break down the reasons why I believe this suitcase is ideal for international travel.

First and foremost, the design of this suitcase is perfect for international travel because it is a durable hard-side spinner.

This means that it will be able to protect your belongings from being crushed when you are on long flights or traveling by bus/train.

Although not the highest quality bag on the market, many buyers and reviewers like Carissa Rawson of ThePointsGuy have successfully taken the Amazon Basic case up to 10 trips, and it’s still working well.

And with 4.6-star ratings and over 30,000 reviews on Amazon, you can trust this bag to last whether you’re a frequent traveler or only take the occasional trip.

Additionally, the four double-spinning wheels make this suitcase extremely easy to maneuver, even when it is fully packed.

There’s even an extendable handle that locks into place when not needed.

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel
    Credit: amazon.com

    What we also love

I also appreciate that this suitcase is highly organized.

Inside the suitcase, you’ll find a fully lined interior with dividers and three zippered pockets that make it easy to separate and arrange your clothes, toiletries, and souvenirs to taste.

Even if you tend to overpack, this suitcase has got you covered.

You can expand the luggage capacity up to 15% if needed.

One of the best things about the Amazon Basics 21-inch Hardside Spinner Suitcase is its price.

Being priced under $100, it’s one of the most affordable and best luggage for international travel on the market.

One of my favourite things about this suitcase is that it comes in a few different colors (black, navy blue, blue and orange) so you can choose the one that best fits your personal style.

    What’s not great

    So what are the downsides?

Well, there is no lock on the Amazon Basic case.

While this might not be a problem for the carry-on, it’s not safe for the checked bag, especially if you travel by plane often.

All in all, the Amazon Basics 21-inch Hardside Spinner Suitcase is a great choice if you’re looking for an affordable yet high-quality luggage option for your next international trip.

    Pros

    • Affordable
    • Expandable
    • Smooth-rolling spinner wheels
    • Popular and well-rated

    Cons

    • No locks on the suitcase

    Specs

    • Dimensions: 22 x 14.9 x 10 inches
    • Weight: 7.34 lbs
    • Warranty: 3 year- warranty
    • Luggage Type: Hardshell
    • Colours: 4

Most durable luggage for international travel- Away The Large: Aluminum Edition

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel
    Credit: Awaytravel.com

The Away Large: Aluminium Edition is the best option if you are a frequent international traveler who needs a relatively affordable suitcase that will protect your stuff while also lasting for many trips.

With The Away Large Aluminium, you are effectively buying a suitcase that comes with strong durability which is usually associated with high-end brands like Tumiand Rimowafor about half the price.

The aluminum hard shell makes this case nearly indestructible while still maintaining all the sleekness you expect from a reputable brand like Away!

The luggage looks fantastic and has plenty of features to make your trip easier.

The 360° spinner wheels are a lifesaver because they roll smoothly from airports to train platforms and cobblestoned streets.

And the slow-release leather handle ensures you can easily lift your suitcase into a car without having to worry about blisters or pains.

Plus, the TSA-approved combination lock (and no zippers) keeps your belongings safe and secure.

You’ll also love that it comes with a few extras like a leather luggage tag, an interior compression system, and a clip-in pocketed panel that make packing a joy.

It even comes with a water-resistant laundry bag that’s perfect for storing your wet clothes, or dirty items.

    Credit: awaytravel.com

    What we also love

What I particularly love about this suitcase is that it’s simple, yet incredibly sleek.

Of course, luggage is more about practicality than style, but it’s still good to have a piece of luggage that looks good and performs well, which is why I consider it one of the best luggage for international travel in 2022.

    What’s not great

With the Away Aluminium luggage, you should expect scratches and dents after many trips.

However, compared to the rips and cracks that can compromise the integrity of some fabric softside and polycarbonate hardshell luggage, this should not be a deal breaker if you are not too bothered by the scruffy aesthetics that a few scratches and dents leave.

Also, while the locks, handles, and wheels are of a good standard, they lack the finesse in fit and finishing that you will see in the premium bands such as Rimowa and Tumi.

But then again, you’d have to pay double the price for those suitcases.

    Pros

    • Durable aluminum shell exterior
    • TSA-approved combo lock
    • 360° spinner wheels

    Cons

    • Will show scuffs and scratches with time
    • Fit and finishing are not as pristine as premium alternatives

    Specs

    • Weight: 16 lbs
    • Capacity: 95L
    • Exterior measurements: 29″ x 20.5″ x 12.5″ (measurement includes wheels)
    • Interior measurements: 26.3″ x 19.2″
    • Hard or soft material: hard
    • Warranty: lifetime.

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

When you’re packing for a long weekend away or heading out on a road trip, you need a dependable duffel bag that can withstand all of your adventures.

The last thing you want is for your bag to fall apart in the middle of your travels.

Enters the YETI Crossroads Duffel Bag 60L.

As you know, YETI’s name is synonymous with toughness, and this Crossroads duffel is no exception.

This bag is made with water-resistant, abrasion-resistant TuffSkin nylon and features a TPU-coated hardshell bottom to help protect your belongings from the wet ground or rough surfaces.

Even better, it has a structured wall foam that allows the bag to keep its shape, rather than collapsing in on itself.

Its sturdy construction and weatherproof materials mean that it can withstand any type of terrain or weather conditions.

This is why I believe it is the best luggage for international travel because it is perfect for any travel or outdoor situation you find yourself in.

Another great feature of this bag is its interior organization.

The bag has two divider panels that separate the bag into three sections, so you can arrange the content of your bag to your heart’s content.

But what if you’re not a fan of dividers?

Well, you can fold away the dividers to make way for a large top opening with ample room that makes it easy to pack and unpack while the several smaller pockets are perfect for storing all your small essentials.

Plus, it has 60L of storage capacity to store everything you need for your trip.

So much so that Kai Burkhardt of CNN Underscored says the Crossroad can fit travel gear up to 5-7 days of travel.

    What we also love

I like that this bag features two carrying styles.

So when you’re not using it as a duffel, you can easily carry it on the shoulder thanks to the detachable shoulder strap.

Whether you’re flying cross-country or hiking through the backcountry, the YETI Crossroads won’t let you down.

    What’s not great

However, I should note that a few users on Amazon and on Yeti’s website expected the bag to be bigger, as it’s marketed as a 60L bag.

I should also inform you that this bag is not a carry-on complaint, you may have to check it for air travel.

    Pros

    • Very durable and water-resistant
    • Lots of storage space
    • Multiple ways to carry

    Cons

    • Not carry-on complaint
    • A bit pricey

    Specs

    • Weight: 4.3 lb
    • Capacity: 60L
    • Dimensions: 24 x 12.5 x 12.5 inches

For organization, the interior is fully lined, with a handy divider for clothes and two zipper pockets for small items.

Another thing to love about this luggage is its sleek, minimal and simple design.

Plus, there are beautiful color designs to choose from.

    What’s not great

While this bag is a catch, there are minor drawbacks worth considering before making your purchase.

The first is that some customers have complained that the luggage is likely to get scuffed, scratched, or dented with time. Additionally, the LEVEL8 luggage is quite heavy and is not expandable.

    Pros

    • Good maneuverability
    • Water-resistant

Best value luggage for international travel- Samsonite Winfield 2 Hardside

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

The Winfield 2 Hardside suitcase is the second appearance in this post from Samsonite. And that’s simply due to the fact that they produce excellent quality luggage options for affordable prices.

This suitcase provides a sizable structure for international travel, so you can fit everything you need inside, and more.

Its 100% polycarbonate exterior provides added durability while ensuring that any dents or damages are reduced as much as possible.

This is definitely a feature you want to look out for when investing in a new piece of international luggage as you don’t want it to break on the first use at the airport.

The case also comes with four 360° spinner wheels, providing you with added flexibility when you’re dragging it through the airport.

The wheels offer a full 360° motion spin so that you won’t struggle to pull it along behind you if it’s very heavy.

You can simply keep it upright and pull it along beside you on all four wheels.

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

    What we also love

The Samsonite Winfield 2 suitcase also comes in a range of different colors, so you don’t have to stick to the run-of-the-mill traditional black case.

If you’re looking for a suitcase that’s strong, durable, and great value for money, then the Winfield 2 is a great investment suitcase to add to your wish list.

    What’s not great

One downside to the Samsonite Winfield 2 Hardside case is that it’s pretty heavy compared to some of the other models on this list.

While it shouldn’t prove to be too much of an issue once the case is full of all your belongings anyway, it is something to keep in mind when looking at the best features of a case when investing in a new one.

    Pros

    • Affordable
    • Durable external material
    • Choice of colours and designs

    Cons

    • Quite heavy compared to other models on this list

    Specs

    • Weight: 5.04kg
    • Dimensions: 71h x 50w x 32d cm
    • Wheels: 4
    • Hard or soft material: hard shell
    • Warranty: lifetime

Best lightweight luggage for international travel- Delsey Paris Helium Aero

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

Similarly to the Samsonite suitcases, the Delsey Paris Helium Aero is made from 100% polycarbonate which means that it has excellent durability and strength against everyday wear and tear.

From numerous reviews I’ve read online, this suitcase is said to be one of the most durable luggage pieces in the market, yet it’s remarkably lightweight at the same time. This means that it’s definitely deserving of a place on this list of best luggage for international travel in 2022.

The bag is equipped with two large internal compartments, complete with numerous pockets that make packing much easier and more enjoyable.

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

    What we also love

The four, double spinner wheels aid in mobility when you’re pulling the case along and you can choose to either pull it behind you on two wheels or beside you by using all four wheels.

    What’s not great

One negative aspect of the Paris Helium Aero suitcase is that it only comes with a two-year warranty which, compared to all the other models on this list of best luggage for international travel, is actually quite subpar.

Of course, you hope that you’d never have to use the warranty on your suitcase anyway, but if it does break after the warranty expires, it means that you won’t be liable to claim for a new one or to get your current one fixed.

Despite that, this suitcase proves to be one of the most durable and strong luggage pieces on the market, without compromising on its lightweight status.

Overall, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this suitcase from Delsey, but I would urge you to read the section at the bottom of this guide for tips on how you can take extra care of your luggage so you don’t have to worry about it breaking or becoming damaged.

    Pros

    • Lightweight
    • Durable hard shell case
    • Affordable price

    Cons

    • Only 2-year warranty

    Specs

    • Weight: 4.62kg
    • Dimensions: 69h x 45w x 29d cm
    • Wheels: 4
    • Hard or soft material: hard shell
    • Warranty: 2 year

Best multipurpose luggage for international travel- Matein Rolling Pack

Lugging around a suitcase, no matter how small, can be a pain – especially if you’re traveling solo.

And if you’re going to be gone for more than a week or two, you’ll want to bring more than just a backpack.

That’s where the Matein rolling backpacks come in.

This versatile bag gives you the best of both worlds because it can be used as both a backpack and a suitcase,

As a result, I believe that this bag is ideal for international travel because it gives you the versatility of a backpack and the convenience of a rolling suitcase.

You can simply pull out the hidden wheels and handle them when needed.

The Matein Rolling Backpack is made from high-quality polyester material that is quite durable enough to withstand a lot of wear and tear.

Both the exterior and bottom of the bag are water-resistant, so your belongings will stay dry even if you get caught in a splash, rain, or snow.

And the lockable zippers ensure that your belongings will be securely stored during your travels.

The Matein has a spacious 45L capacity and multiple compartments, so you can easily organize your belongings.

There’s a large main compartment for clothes and other items, as well as a front compartment with pockets for smaller items like your passport and boarding pass.

Plus, the two side pockets are perfect for water bottles or snacks and a built-in separate laptop pocket for your tech.

    What we also love
Another great thing about the Matein rolling pack is that it’s comfortable to wear.

The straps are adjustable so you can customize the fit, and the back panel is padded so it won’t dig into your back.
And the wheels are smooth so they won’t make noise as you walk down the aisle.

    What’s not great

However, some reviewers on Amazon bemoaned the fact that when loaded to full capacity, the pack gets too heavy.

As such, you likely won’t be able to wear it as a backpack.

Also, keep in mind that this affordable bag is not the most durable piece of luggage out there and probably won’t last more than a year or two if you use it frequently.

Overall, if you’re looking for the best luggage for international travel, look no further than the Matein Rolling Backpack!

    Pros

    • Very affordable
    • 2 in 1 wheels backpack
    • Comfortable and versatile
    • Lockable zippers for security

    • Not for heavy use
    • Can get big and bulky when worn as a backpack

    What we also love

Its versatile design makes it easy to carry around.

The Black Hole can be carried by the handles as a duffel bag or as a backpack through airports or on long hikes.

    Best of all?

It is thankfully crafted with padded shoulder straps and a fully adjustable harness to keep your shoulders happy throughout your trips.

    What’s not great

Many people seem to love this duffel bag, but the main complaint is that it’s just too huge.

Others find it inconvenient to carry around because it’s so heavy and doesn’t fit into a small space, like an airplane overhead compartment.

All in all, if you’re looking for a versatile and tough piece of luggage that will see you through any journey, the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel is a perfect choice.

Plus, its two sturdy wheels make it a dream to wheel around – no more struggling with heavy baggage!

    What’s not great

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

When it comes to buying luggage for international travel, there are a few considerations to be aware of.

Luggage doesn’t come cheap, therefore you don’t want to be spending hundreds of pounds on something that’s only going to last you for two trips.

Below, I’ve listed all my top tips of the things to consider when buying luggage for international travel, including the type of luggage, weight, size, and materials.

    Size

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

The size of your suitcase will be entirely dependent on how much room you think you’re going to need to pack all your necessary belongings for your international trip.

I don’t think bigger is necessarily always better when it comes to fitting everything into your case; you also need to look for the shape of it and how well it’s likely to fit all your things in together nicely.

Furthermore, most airlines will have strict regulations on the size of checked luggage so you can’t just go out and buy the biggest case you can find and hope that it’ll be OK. Each airline will differ somewhat in the exact dimension measurements and weight allowances, so always remember to check the airline’s website before you fly and before you purchase a new suitcase so that you can ensure it will be allowed into the hold-all of the plane.

Skyscanner have a great feature that allows you to see the checked baggage allowances for major airlines so you can have an idea of the maximum sized suitcase you should invest in.

    Backpack or suitcase?

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

Another consideration you’ll have to think about when buying a new piece of luggage for international travel is whether you want a backpack, duffel bag, suitcase, or another type of baggage model.

Most often, people will opt for a suitcase as it seems like the easiest option to go for when traveling long distances.

However, as we can see above with the examples of the Osprey Sojourn Wheeled Luggage and the Eagle Creek Duffel bag, there are many makes and models of luggage available that all offer different features.

Depending on your own personal needs, you will need to decide whether a suitcase or backpack-style luggage item will be better suited to you.

    Weight

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

Have you ever been at an airport check-in desk when the person in front of you is stood trying to unpack their suitcase so they can make it weigh less so that it passes through the airline’s luggage weight allowance?

    Don’t be that person!

While you can take control of how much your case weighs once it’s actually packed, there’s not much you can do about the initial weight of your baggage.

However, you can ensure that you purchase a lightweight one so that once you have started to pack, the weight of the bag doesn’t really matter too much.

The luggage pieces in the guide above are all relatively lightweight and most of them weigh less than 5kg, to begin with.

So if you have a checked luggage allowance from your airline of 25kg, you still have at least 20kg of your own belongings that you can add to the case!

    Handles

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

A strong and sturdy handle is an absolute must when it comes to luggage for international travel.

You will likely be carrying it or wheeling it around to many different places, therefore you want to ensure that the handle will endure the test of time. Most new suitcases nowadays come with ergonomic handles that fit the shape of your hand so you don’t have to worry about obtaining blisters thanks to pulling your case along.

If you opt for a backpack checked luggage item instead of a suitcase, then make sure the handles on the bag are strong enough for you to carry all the weight on your back or by hand as a duffel bag.

    Zips and locks

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

If you are travelling to the USA, you are required to have a TSA-approved lock or zipper on your bag.

The Transportation Security Administration screen every person’s baggage before it gets placed on the aeroplane. So if they think something looks peculiar in someone’s bag, they may open it up for inspection.

If your bag doesn’t have a TSA-approved lock or zipper, then you run the risk of having your bag destroyed while they try and gain access to inside. Make sure you have a TSA lock or zip that will grant them easy access to your baggage.

    Wheels

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

Suitcases typically come equipped with either two or four wheels (although if you have a three-wheeled suitcase, I definitely want to see it!).

Two wheels on a suitcase means that you can drag it along behind you, whereas a four-wheeled suitcase is typically much easier to pull along as it can easily glide beside you.

There are several factors that determine whether a two-wheel or four-wheel suitcase is best and those factors are usually practicality, cost and your own personal preference. Four-wheel cases are generally considered to be easier to glide alongside you. However, they can also get stuck in uneven paths and cobblestones, so it’s really down to your own personal preference as to which one is best.

    Materials

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel
    Credit: awaytravel.com

The materials that your luggage is made from really depends on the quality of the luggage, as well as how durable and sturdy it’s likely to be.

Bags that are made from polycarbonate are likely to be more durable, water-resistant and scratch-proof, and they’re also likely to be more lightweight.

However, bags made from polypropylene will be the most lightweight, but they’re not quite as tough and durable as polycarbonate baggage. You need to weigh up the pros and cons of each type of material and see whether you’re willing to sacrifice weight for a more durable finish.

How to take care of your luggage

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

Taking care of your luggage requires making sure that you clean it properly using the right tools and cleaning supplies.

Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as just putting the case into the washing machine; there are numerous steps you need to take in order to clean it properly!

How you clean your luggage is also dependent on the type of material it’s made from. Thankfully, Delsey have a guide to cleaning hardside, soft side and leather luggage so you can ensure your suitcase or backpack is properly taken care of.

    Clean the wheels regularly

Another way you can make your luggage last longer and ensure that it stays in top condition for as long as possible is by cleaning the wheels regularly. That’s if your baggage has wheels, of course.

The wheels are likely to be the dirtiest part of the entire bag as they’ll be constantly dragged across dirty floors, both inside and outside.

You can carefully clean the wheels of your suitcase by using a toothbrush to gently brush away the dirt. Be careful not to get too much water in the rotation mechanism of the wheels as it could cause it to go rusty and therefore the wheels won’t run as smoothly!

Which brand of luggage is the most durable?

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

If I have to pick the brand of luggage that is the most durable, I’ll go with Pelican.

The brand is notable for making very quality travel bags you can trust to handle the wear and tear of travel as well as the bumps, banging and related abuses bags can get.

Pelican makes high-performance protective luggage that stands the test of time.

Additionally, their luggage come with extremely tough and watertight exterior, lighting systems, TSA combination lock and variety of options too.

With a lifetime guarantee, you are covered because you know they’ll either repair or replace a bag, giving you the needed peace of mind.

The major downside of most Pelican suitcases is that they then to be bulky and heavy.

This means that this is not the luggage to go for if you need a carryon.

Other top-ranking durable luggage brands to consider include Samsonite, Delsey, TravelPro, Away, and Rimowa.

What is the maximum weight of luggage for international flights?

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

The maximum weight of luggage for international flights is usually 50 pounds and under 62 linear inches (height + width + depth) per passenger.

As such, some airlines may charge extra for baggage that exceeds the 50-pound limit.

However, some airlines do allow more weight, so it’s always best to check with the airline ahead of time.

What if my luggage is 1kg overweight?

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

If your luggage is 1 kg overweight, you may be able to get away with paying the baggage fee. But this is not always the case, so try to keep your luggage within the weight limit to avoid any fees.

If your suitcase is significantly overweight, you may need to either remove some items or pay a higher excess baggage fee.

In some cases, the airline may refuse to transport your luggage if it’s too heavy.

What size checked luggage is allowed on international flights?

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

The size that’s allowed on International flights is subject to unique airline restrictions and where you are traveling. However, the standard checked luggage size wavers around 27 x 21 x 14 inches, and should not be longer than 62 linear inches (length + width + depth) with wheels and handles included.

Again, international airlines have different restrictions for carry-on luggage, so I advise you to check with your airline first to get their exact requirements.

Is it better to travel with soft or hard luggage?

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

Is hard or soft luggage better?

In my view, it is better to travel with hard luggage. While soft luggage can be more convenient for some travelers, I find that hard luggage is more water-resistant, durable, and can protect your belongings better during transit.

Its solid exterior also means better security for your goods as they can’t be easily crushed or slashed.

Additionally, it can be easier to move around since it is not as bulky as soft luggage.

That said, soft-sided luggage on the other hand is more malleable and can be squished into tight spaces, which can make them easier to fit in the overhead compartment.

They are also more flexible should you need to fit more items or extra souvenirs.

Whichever type of luggage you choose, make sure it has good reviews and that it’s approved by the airlines you’ll be traveling with.

What is not allowed in checked baggage for international flights?

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

There are a few restricted items that are generally not allowed in checked baggage on international flights, primarily for safety reasons. This includes the following: lithium batteries, flammable items, explosives, matches, pressure containers, poisons, infectious materials, magnetic materials, radioactive materials, illegal drugs, and marijuana.

Film can get ruined when it goes through checked luggage x-ray screening, and expensive items such as jewelry should be kept with you in case luggage gets lost.

What type of luggage is most durable?

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

In my estimation, a hard-sided suitcase is more durable. This is because hard shell cases can withstand being thrown around and kicked, as well as a lot of wear and tear.

The key to choosing any type of luggage is to make sure that it is of good quality and that it is made from durable materials.

You also want to make sure that the seams are strong and that the zippers work properly.

Cheap suitcases often fall apart after just a few trips, so it’s worth spending a little bit more money on a good quality piece of luggage.

Can you fit more in a soft or hard suitcase?

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

I believe you can fit more into a soft side suitcase because they are lightweight pieces that can flex and compress. These types of bags will always have space for over packing, and are more flexible should you need to fit more items or extra souvenirs.

Also, most soft shell cases tend to be expandable, and have more compartments and pockets, compared to hard side luggage.

However, if you’re packing heavier items like books or electronics, then a hard-sided suitcase might be better because it will be more durable and able to withstand more weight.

At the end of the day, it’s important to choose a suitcase that fits your needs and travel style.

Should I put locks on my checked luggage?

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

While there are varying takes on this matter on Reddit, I think that you should put locks on your checked luggage because it provides an extra level of security for your belongings.

Just keep in mind that TSA agents may need to open your bags for inspection, and they can break locks if necessary.

So if you’re worried about someone getting into your bag, you might want to consider using a TSA-approved lock, which will allow agents to open your bag without damaging the lock.

    Wheels (Two-wheel vs Spinner)

Best large lightweight luggage for international travel

Which is better- two-wheel or four-wheel luggage?

It ultimately comes down to your personal preference, but I would always recommend a four-wheeled suitcase as opposed to a two-wheel one.

This is because I find suitcases with four wheels much easier to pull along as they usually glide smoothly alongside me.

Whereas a two-wheeled suitcase has to be dragged along behind me and I find this much more uncomfortable.

Plus, for international travel, you’ll be dealing more with smooth airport floors, so four spinner wheels is perfect.

However, if you’re mostly going to be using your luggage on cobblestone streets, train tracks, or on more rugged surfaces, then I’d recommend opting for 2 wheels.

The added stability will make maneuvering your suitcase much easier.

How should I pack for an international trip?

    Bottom Line

    1. Hey thank you for the awesome review!  There are some decent looking luggage carriers on this list.  However, I, much like yourself, think the best one is the one that you have top rated, the Travelpro Maxlite 5 29” Expandable Spinner.  I love how this one looks honestly!  It looks sturdy, and it has a lot of space. I also like that not only is it water resistant, it is also stain resistant!

    3. I haven’t gone on a trip for a long time. It has been about a year since the last trip. For long distances traveling, I prefer suitcases, especially for people with small children. If you are traveling with children, you need to prepare many things. I happen to look for a suitcase. Thanks for your sharing.

      • Hi Li,

Thank you for your comment – I appreciate your view; suitcases are one of those things that you may not use often. However, when you need to use one, you want to know that you have something decent that will serve you well – especially where children are involved. If I may ask how many children do you have? Must be tricky when going on a long haul flight:)?

    5. Hi Femi, your article has all the information I would need to decide on my next purchase for travel. I don’t travel a lot, but all travel for me is international because I live on an island. My luggage has to be durable and suit my needs every trip. I don’t want a backpack nor a Duffel type. I prefer semi soft outsides and dark colors. Based on the details you have presented I would go for the Briggs and Riley or the Travel pro Maxlite, with the Maxlite having the edge. It is so elegant. Thank you for all this information. I need to start planning for my next trip.

      • Hi JJ,

        Thank you for commenting.

I appreciate your preference and I can almost identify with you as I live on an island too – depending on how you see it the UK where I live is an island and I always need a suitcase when I’m off to Europe:)

All the best with you packing:)

        Cheers

    6. I don’t travel a lot on a daily basis but I do have to go on long trips every month. I have been using a backup for years because it is so convenient for me but I think it is time to change so I have landed on your blog at the right time. Maxlite is something that I like from your list, spinning wheels have become essential these days when you have to change terminals in the airport.

I will bookmark Maxlite and Osprey Sojourn from this list for the time when I will have to carry a lot of languages, like a foreign trip or something. But what I love the most from this list is Fairview, a perfect backpack for people like me. I don’t mind carrying weight on my back, I want my hands to be free while traveling. However, 70L is a little too much for my need do we have the option of adjusting the size or do you have another recommendation for me?

      • Hi Hari,

Thanks for stopping by to comment on my post. It’s good to see that you fancy a couple of options.

Regarding your question – I would suggest you purchase a small backpack instead, and either of these two are my recommendations: Osprey Farpoint 40L Men’s Travel Backpack (affiliate link) or Tortuga Outbreaker Backpack(45L).

The Tortuga Outbreaker is a fav of mine simply for the fact that the folks behind the brand are actually avid backpackers themselves so they know exactly what men need and want when it comes to a vast range of backpacks for travelling. That said the Outbreaker can sometimes come across as over-engineered plus it’s quite dear in price. You can read my detailed review of it here.

Osprey Farpoint 40L on the other is not as dear as the Tortuga but I believe it will serve you well. I haven’t done a review of it but there are lots of reviews on Amazon for you to see that most people who buy it are happy.

Hope that helps – any further questions and you can give me a shout.

        Cheers

    7. Thanks a lot for sharing with us such an amazing article about best luggage for international travel.

I believe that every traveler should read this article and choose the best luggage for travel. On my last trip I had problems with luggage because it was very small and I couldn’t buy many souvenirs. My favorite is the Osprey Packs Sojourn Wheeled Luggage which is also very cheap (only $ 178.53). For me it is a great advantage that it can be carried like a backpack or wheeled.I like to walk and visit many museums when i travel in different countries. With this luggage I could do this very easily. Thanks again and wish you all the best.

      • Hey Nimrod,

Thanks for stopping by to comment – I wanted to offer a variety as I know there will be folks you want their hands to be free, who are happy to carry their luggage on their back but would also like the option to wheel if they choose –  hence the Osprey Packs Sojourn.

        Cheers

    8. I just got a call that I’ll be going to Germany in a few months and must buy a new luggage. According to my sources, we cannot take a large suitcase. I’m supposed to buy a small one and pack a small amount of clothes though it’ll e two weeks! I find it really hard though. However, I’m sure with these luggages, I’ll be able to.

    9. I am so glad I found your article! Besides being very well written, I learned some important things. I’ve never traveled by plane before, so I didn’t know about weight restrictions! I definitely have more research to do before my first overseas trip! With all your handy luggage reviews, I believe the Delsey Paris Helium Aero is the one for me. It’s both stylish and affordable, plus not too heavy. My trip is planned for about six months from now. I didn’t realize how much I didn’t know. Thank you so much for your research and posting!

    10. Femi, the Travelpro Maxlite pro is a great suitcase at affordable price and I just checked that it also comes with free shipping. Its been years since I upgraded my luggage and I travel a couple of times a year. I also like the fact that it has four wheels and a lifetime warranty. Your tips on proper caring of luggage is very helpful. Keeping it clean and using an old toothbrush to clean the wheels is a great tip! Overpacking is another mistake I often make but I’ll watch out for that henceforth.

      • Hi Padma,

Thank you for taking the time to read the entire post – at least you must have browsed to the very end for you to see the narrative on taking care of them:)

Yes, it’s important to look after the suitcases. While I have shortlisted really quality suitcases, proper care will ensure your ‘investment’ is for the long term – because they are an investment after all!

    11. Wow Femi, these suitcases are outstanding! so much information about each and everyone of them, long gone are the days where you had to have someone sit on your suitcase to get it as flat as possible so you could zip it up!
The strength and longevity of these suitcases are a plus, I can’t tell you how often have our suitcases broken, or got ripped and those dreaded zips!!!
Any one of these that is expandable and on spinners would do me! When I viewed the demo on how this works, it’s so easy peasy!!!
I also have to say your post is like an ‘Aladins cave’, you can’t help but delve deeper and deeper to see what other goodies you have to offer!!!
A very thorough article and love how one can find destinations and how within each one there is so much to discover!
      Trully an eye opener!
Keep up this so useful and very helpful information, this will help many who want to upgrade and in an intelligent way.
      Thanks for sharing.
      Julia.
